The age of steampunk

There was a good article in today's Boston Globe on Steampunk. It doesn't mention Make in the text, but many of the people and their projects have been featured on the Make Blog. It provides some good back story for the art form and lots of pointers to where to get more information on Steampunk.

Interesting article, but I don't agree with some of the comments - true, current technology is hidden behind plastic and such, but as the above picture demonstrates, most of steampunk consists of putting elaborate decorations onto _current_ technology, rendering all the technology behind the scenes.

It seems to me that steampunk is merely putting it into a different case - not doing something magical to make it.

Then again, everything I know about steampunk is from reading make, so I could have it all wrong.

Um, you do have to make the case.

But point taken. I've projects in the planning stage that will satisfy your desire to see application of actual 19th century technology - stay tuned.

"Steampunk" hitting the Main Stream Media can only mean one thing...

All sorts of cheap consumer goods are going to arrive with faux gears and plastic valves painted to look brass.

Oh well... It was fun for a while.
