I spotted this on the ReadyMade blog and was reminded that Fluevog has a yearly effort called "Open source footwear"... I'm not sure if they're still doing it (seems so) the entries from the previous year are a good read... -

We might use the whole thing, base a design of our own on it or just part of it. And your idea might only be for part of a shoe anyway. This keeps everything fair.

The problem with open source shoes (literally, with patterns and such, and not just an open sketchbook) is that there isn't a lending library of lasts out there. I've got a pair that's more or less my size that I use for SCA footwear, but it makes a pretty generic men's shoe. For some of their previous winners, particularly some of the women's shoes, you'd need a pretty exotic pair of lasts.
