I visited the new New York Times building, in the lobby they have an amazing installation called "Moveable type" - it displays realtime and archived information from the NYTimes, it also makes manual typewriter, teletype machine and rotary phone noises while the vacuum florescent displays display away... Here are some photos - Link & The Moveable Type - installation @ the New York Times building - Link (video).

They look like graphical VFDs-- vacuum florescent displays. Most of the VFDs you find are character based. Compared to their equivalent lcd counterparts, VFDs are very expensive.

they look like big character VFDs to me.
A similar effect could be created for a lot less money with an LCD like this one http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=813 (but bigger of course.)
