The assignment was wide open: Design something based on the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle, and develop it into a prototype product. The results ranged from simple mechanical devices to complex electronic machines, but all served that central purpose in original ways.

To meet the challenge, seven teams of 18 students in this year’s 2.009 Product Engineering Processes class, taught by David Wallace, came up with a wide variety of ingenious ideas, which they presented last week at a packed session attended by about 150 outside engineers and product developers.

I don’t see how a coffee bean sorter is all that innovative. It looks like just a screen and that’s something anybody can figure out for themselves if given the chance to just look at screening material.

The plastic bottles have me worried. Do we really need to live with even more carcinogenic materials? Do we need to completely encase poorer nations in it?

The bottle/can/trash sorter is the only thing in there that’s mildly MIT worthy.

  2. George Carlin was right says:

I think sequestering the plastic bottles in buildings as insulation is at least better than letting them gather in the North Pacific Gyre (which contains a floating mass of plastic the size of Texas… and it’s growing!).
