I just made a bunch of the TV-B-Gone kits, one quick test you can do when you make these kits is to press the button and shine the IR LEDs at a web cam, it will show up as a nice purpley color and you know you're device is working if you don't happen to have a TV (I don't). Most CCD or CMOS detectors will show infrared light when you point a TV remote at it, more so if it's a high powered version.

@maker360 - the universe-b-gone (UBG) is currently being constructed and located at CERN, near geneva, switzerland. the UBG is scheduled to begin operation in may 2008. when activated, it is hoped that the UBG will produce the elusive higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and 'missing links' in the standard model of physics, and explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass and likely turn off most TVs.

Help, Please! Is there any hope for an old fart who can't read a circuit schematic? My kid showed me the article in volume 9 about building the cracker box amp, I was fine up to step 1h. It said "Use the same technique to install and make connections". My technique is fine, but I know very little about electronics. Step by step directions would be great for someone like me. Any suggestions? As to the amp, I did figure most of it out but where do you hook up the speaker? My kids got me a subscription to MAKE so it's looks like I'm in big trouble for at least the next year.

Nonsense! I don't think he looks sad or creepy. I think he looks rather sexy, and this is a particularly good photo.
Now that that's said...I bought one of those cheapy CVS "disposable" camcorders that I now keep on my workbench for checking the output of IR LEDS. You just have to remove the filter from the lens assembly and you've got a sturdy, cheap and simple IR diagnostic tool!
