@The NYC Toy fair 2008 the DADO cubes are one of the few USA designed, developed and manufactured building products. These "cubes" explore architectural principles... proportion, balance, structure, composition, and color.
While I think these blocks are good for kids, I suspect artists will start tinkering with them soon. Their clear version "Ice" is just asking to be LED-ified and turned in to some type of Logan's run center piece.

My family had toys nearly identical to those when I was growing up in the 70s. Play Plax in the flat squares that you can see here http://www.timewarptoys.com/playplax.jpg and in a cylindrical shape too.
