Comment avatars! (Post and win something today)

Make Pt0542-1
We've added comment avatars on MAKE, so if you register to post comments on MAKE you can now upload a user picture (see above). To encourage you to do so, please register (MoveableType) then click your name, upload a user pic and post a comment in this post - I'll pick a few winners and send them a MAKE Pocket Ref!

(Update: We have uncovered some problems with the new commenting, working on it now - please keep posting though!)

(Update 2: Things seem to be working now, so please try - if you have (comment/login) issues at all please describe them in the comments, thanks!)

(Update 3: From our IT folks -- ..have them recreate the account and or verify their signin/display names in MT system. They may be conflicting their username with their display name when signing in which would give an invalid login. I was able to go through the whole register process and was able to login with the new userID without any problems.)

I love Make: I love Make: I love Make: I love Make: I love Make: I love Make:
... did I win? where do I add my avatar?

Posted by: Steve Joblin on March 26, 2008 at 7:52 AM

Same thing happened to me as what happened to Tam... even though I got an error message, it still took.

Posted by: Jean-François Charles on March 26, 2008 at 7:55 AM

I cannot add an avatar with Safari 3.1. Visiting movabletype.com won't help, and movabletype.org is currently down.
Best...

Phil: just barely missed the change to meet you at SXSW, but at least I can comment here and say 'hi'!

Posted by: Sly on March 26, 2008 at 7:57 AM

YAY, little pictures!

Posted by: Mark "bobtiki" Boszko on March 26, 2008 at 7:58 AM

FYI, No avatar submission for me either. Just password/url/etc changes. Everything but avatar.

Posted by: cori on March 26, 2008 at 8:01 AM

it would be nice if it worked with OpenID, but here I am.

Confirming Tam's and John's experiences, I can't see anywhere to add an avatar...

Posted by: daenris on March 26, 2008 at 8:02 AM

Personally I'm finding that I'm unable to log in now. I use the password that I know is correct and it tells me it's an invalid login. So I tried creating a new account because I figured maybe it had reset accounts, but it tells me a user with that name already exists.

Posted by: Pavel Ushakov on March 26, 2008 at 8:04 AM

The errors will be corrected shortly Tam...

Posted by: Pavel Ushakov on March 26, 2008 at 8:05 AM

This is nice :)

Posted by: alcurb (a.k.a. alcurbSF) on March 26, 2008 at 8:21 AM

In Movable Type I've tried my old password and it doesn't log me in. I used the password recovery feature; received the email, used the new password and it didn't work. I created a new user; received the email; clicked on the link and tried to log in, and it didn't work. I think there is something wrong with Movable Type.

Annonymous Post!

Posted by: Tam Nguyen on March 26, 2008 at 8:32 AM

I've never really gotten the chance to comment on Make, even though I read it every day.

I do like this, actually, and I'll definitely start commenting more often.

Posted by: mgroves on March 26, 2008 at 8:34 AM

Did I win?

Posted by: Mauricio Diaz on March 26, 2008 at 8:35 AM

This is great! I already like MAKE, but now I can do a little bit of self promotion here :P

Couldn't figure out how to upload the avatar, though. The option doesn't seem to be available in my profile. I'll upload later, when the problem is solved.

(I'd still love to get a Pocket Ref, though ;))

Posted by: mgroves on March 26, 2008 at 8:36 AM

"then click your name, upload a user pic"

I clicked my name, but there's no place to upload a pic.

Posted by: Tam Nguyen on March 26, 2008 at 8:40 AM

Err, I hate to be a bugger like this, but I can't seem to upload a user pic. The only clickable text of my name is the one above the comment box which takes me to my MovableType profile page in which I can only change my password; and it makes no mention of pictures.

Also, when I post, it asks gives me an error complaining about my submission code being incorrect? I'm assuming its referring to the anti-robot code, but since I'm signed in, it doesn't ask for a security code, so I have to reload the page to get it to work.

Just full of errors today.

Posted by: John M on March 26, 2008 at 8:41 AM

All I see when I do this is an area to change my password, nothing about uploading a picture.

Posted by: Phillip Torrone on March 26, 2008 at 8:45 AM

@Tam Nguyen - you might be hitting "preview" -- we're looking in to these issues and seeing if it's something on our end too.

Posted by: daenris on March 26, 2008 at 9:05 AM

I'm unable to log in. I'm using my login 'daenris' and the password that I know is correct and it tells me invalid login. Then I tried to create a new account because I thought maybe they were reset with the change, but it tells me that user already exists.

Also the first time I tried to submit this comment it just took me to a very sparse error page with something about a smarty error or something.

Posted by: Rick on March 26, 2008 at 9:16 AM

Appreciate the effort and I'll check back later to see if it works!

Posted by: Pauly on March 26, 2008 at 9:30 AM

Don't seem to see anywhere to add my Avatar from the Moveable Type page....

Posted by: Becky Stern on March 26, 2008 at 9:43 AM

I wonder if this will change how people comment.

Posted by: Kent KB on March 26, 2008 at 9:53 AM

MoevableType?,Movabletype, MoveableType? There is your problem, Spelling ;)
No, I cannot add avatar yet....

This avatar was made with a lovely gameboycamera :-)

Hi peeps!

Posted by: Pavel Ushakov on March 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM

Hello Natalie!

Posted by: daenris on March 26, 2008 at 11:17 AM

same as darus67 and alcurb here. Tried resetting my password, got the email, can't login with the new password either.

Posted by: daenris on March 26, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Also, what's up with the time? I posted my comment after darus, but it's showing up as 10 minutes before. I'd thought the comments were appearing weirdly and in between other comments, but this is confirmation.

Posted by: jkiniston on March 26, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Now I can rock my Fez on Make. Woohoo!

Posted by: darus67 on March 26, 2008 at 11:27 AM

I can't even log in.
I clicked on the
"i'm an idiot and forgot my password" link and the
system sent me a new password, but that password
doesn't work either.

Posted by: J_Hodgie on March 26, 2008 at 11:32 AM

Pictures are always welcome, if I can figure it out.

Posted by: Phillip Torrone on March 26, 2008 at 11:36 AM

(Update 3: From our IT folks -- ..have them recreate the account and or verify their signin/display names in MT system. They may be conflicting their username with their display name when signing in which would give an invalid login. I was able to go through the whole register process and was able to login with the new userID without any problems.)

Posted by: daenris on March 26, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Okay, but the issue is that we're already registered. I just can't login with my password, or with the new reset password (which gets correctly sent to my email address when I enter my userid).

And I can't "verify [my] signin/display names in MT system" because I can't log in at all.

Posted by: Cory on March 26, 2008 at 11:51 AM

What better avatar than a remake of a different graphic?

Posted by: jakeofalltrades.wordpress.com on March 26, 2008 at 12:58 PM

Hmm, I think you might have something here!

Posted by: alcurbSF on March 26, 2008 at 1:16 PM

It appears that user name is not the same thing as the screen name. I've been trying to log on using the wrong name all along. I had never encountered this problem before. Perhaps the Username should be something more specific like "log-on name" and make the screen name the "avatar name".

Posted by: Daenris on March 26, 2008 at 1:16 PM

Appears to be working now. Nice.

Posted by: rmadams on March 26, 2008 at 1:20 PM

WATCH OUT! SARIN GAS ATTACK!

Posted by: alandove on March 26, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Well, let's see if this works. Happy (very belated) Hallowe'en.

Posted by: morelightmorelight.com on March 26, 2008 at 3:28 PM

So I'm psyched that you guys allow us to show our mugs - I like. My website provides a pavatar, as long as you are hooking us up with openid, what about supporting pavatar so that you automatically get my avatar without me having to go over and upload one to your website?

Thanks!

Posted by: morelightmorelight.com on March 26, 2008 at 3:32 PM

I'm logged in with openid - it'd be nice if you picked up my name and details from my openid server, btw.

You also could save some time by supporting pavatar with openid - I don't have to login and edit a profile etc you just get the details from my server.

Hope this helps, and sorry if this is a dupe comment.

Posted by: Mauricio Diaz on March 26, 2008 at 3:36 PM

Hey apparently profile pictures work now, great!

Posted by: paulrich on March 26, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Let's see if I can set this up with the same ID and avatar as I use on Flickr... If it works, the photo is of me, wearing my finest quadrophonic headphones.

Posted by: SuperFreq on March 26, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Profile pictures are cool. I love Make!!! Not just because of the profile pictures. No, I am not kissing ass to win a prize. I love you just the way you are Make... come here make... mmmmmm....

Posted by: blubrick on March 26, 2008 at 4:55 PM

I know what password I have always used for the Make: blog - I have not forgotten it. I can't reset my password because apparently "User has not set password hint".

It seems I can't re-create my account in MT because that name already exists.

Has someone really taken my login name? Or has someone screwed up somewhere?

Incidentally, the password hint field is mandatory in the account creation form, so how it is "not set "is something of a mystery

Posted by: JP on March 26, 2008 at 5:41 PM

Fantastic.

Posted by: Tordek on March 26, 2008 at 5:51 PM

Wheeeee, Avatarzors!!!

Posted by: Ben on March 26, 2008 at 6:18 PM

My standard avatar is an IR photo taken on a modified camera of me in front of the house Grant Wood used in the painting "American Gothic". It's in Iowa, and is considered by some to be the second most recognizable house in the US, after the White House. I'm actually wearing a black T-shirt, but it shows up as white in IR.

Long-time Make blog reader. Long time maker, before it was called that.

Posted by: John M on March 26, 2008 at 7:11 PM

Works now! No more problems.

Posted by: Spikenzie on March 26, 2008 at 9:33 PM

I couldn't get this to work with Safari, but it worked first try with Firefox.

Hey everybody don't forget to make plans to get to the Make Faire on May 3 & 4 2008 at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds. That is in just over a month!
