Here is a fairly easy way to make a digital balance. It is able to measure amounts less than 1 milligram. A balance with this resolution is still be fairly expensive, so building one may be a great solution for those budding chemists with a limited budget. Digital balance

I was going to read the page, but I think his capslock key is broken.
Anyway, you can get a scale with 1mg resolution on DX for $24 (not commenting on the project, just pointing this out).
