POV Jumprope concept

Here's an idea for a persistence of vision jumprope which displays cycles, time, or calories burned.
It's only a design concept at this point, but I'm sure some knowledgeable maker out there can beat it to the punch. Hmm, I wonder if the (somewhat) variable curvature of the rope would present a legibility problem - perhaps necessitating a wider display area? - POV jumprope [Thanks, goodEvans!]

Since a jumprope has a constant force applied to it, it always forms a catenary curve, which can be described by a simple equation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catenary
Furthermore, since the order of the parameter, a, is the only thing that changes with the position of the pivot points, the actual warp of the display won't change, only its depth. In short, once you adapt for one catenary, you've adapted for all of them, and the text shouldn't be distorted. That being said, I'm certain there's a way using two strain gauges to calculate the sum of the forces on the rope to figure out what a is dynamically, and adapt the display accordingly. Anyone else have any thoughts?
