DIY timelapse photo setup

Diy Timelapse Rig
From the MAKE Flickr photo pool

Ken built a timelapse photography setup with a rooftop view -

I'm embarking on a very long timelapse movie project, and trying to do it on the cheap, so I put this rig together. I'm using a modified outdoor electrical box as an enclosure and a cheap old compact digital camera, remote controlled by gphoto running on linux. This is a flickr site shwoing the process, along with my first movie.

Ken here. As a couple people have astutely observed, this is not linux in the photo, but XP running a great program called GBTimelapse. My permanent rooftop rig, however is controlled by gphoto2 running on Ubuntu server.

hrmmm that computer looks like a d600, I hope you have replaced the harddrive in it. The stock hard drives in those go bad on a regular basis.

Oh yea neat project ;-)

You might want to come back on it, get some raw photos w/ bracketing.

That way, you can process the stack as HDR and really get some amazing results.

Just a suggestion, looks great so far.

You must live near me...

I have almost the same view of St. Paul's as in your time lapse. I've done some nice time lapses in the other direction pointing toward Bernal Heights. Good luck with your project! -- David

RDAC - yeah the HDR stuff is beautiful. I'm already looking at about terabyte / year in accumulated images, but hey disks are cheap these days :)

David... howdy neighbor!
