Does steampumk draw an aesthetic connection to thomas pynchon's novel "against the day", published in 2006?

About a month ago, I made my own Steampunk ray gun prop. I wish I'd used a wooden stock though, this one looks nice. Here's mine if anyone's interested (shameless blog plug):
