Make:

How many times has new apple software/firmware wiped out people's hardware?

I usually wait at least 3 weeks before getting the new version, why seek early access? There's not even really anything new in the releases.

the 2.0 release of the iphone is *just* new things.

not everyone is exactly like you Oracle, some may like to tinker with their devices and install new things. perhaps the fear of a losing data isn't a factor for some and backups can be a good idea.

update,install worked: my phone now has 2.0, the app store is awesome and the new geotagging / geo features are a lot of fun - i'm going outside to check test it out now.

@Phil - Wow quite a switch. Now you're the one making personal attacks and being very condescending to others on the site.

To call downloading a new official release "tinkering with their device" in the Make sense is just laughable. A hacked firmware, jailbreak (which I've played with), etc is certainly tinkering. But the latest official release? Come on. The post certainly does belong here, but your comments are way out of line.

Anyway, to be fair, why not include a "related" link to the version of iTunes that automatically repartitioned and reformatted your HD if you had more than one partition on it. That was a classic moment in iPod history. While you're at it, what about the version of the iPod firmware that messed up older models. It was fixable but it was also some gentle encouragement to buy a new iPod (I'm not saying apple did it on purpose to trick people into upgrading -- as a lot did say at the time, but even as an accident, it still screws over people who try it early).

@The Oracle - not at all, it's true - not everyone is exactly like you, or exactly like me (thank goodness, there is enough of the both of us!). i don't think that's a personal attack. some people like to use unreleased software on their devices, some do not (sounds like you do not) the firmware is not out yet, use at your own risk.

the download isn't official, don't use it if you're worried about zorking your device.

@Phil - The personal attack I meant was when you implied I don't like to tinker with my devices. Says a lot about me that I consider that an attack.

As for the post here, I never said it should be posted here. It should be. I just wanted to add a big warning label to it (and again, I understand why you didn't -- you'd have put warning labels on everything here), but I don't think you needed to jump on me for adding my own.

@The Oracle - i 100% assume you like to tinker with your devices from your participation here and past posts, sorry if it sounded like anything else.

as far as warning, yah --- we have tons on the site, i don't think i need to warn people more than i *did* --- "do so at your own risk, etc"

and "Void your warranty, violate a user agreement, fry a circuit, blow a fuse, poke an eye out... Welcome to the Make Blog!"

it's the MAKE blog, it's not the apple support site :)
