This would be a great project for anyone interesting in learning about PIC programming. I really like the graphical interface for designing your own patterns. You can download the schematics and source code form the website.

The idea of this project came from my youngest son. He was dreaming of a small tool able to write symbols or pictures on a screen. As a graphic LCD (even bought at Crownhill :) ) was too expensive (or too easy??), the solution adopted was to pilot a matrix of Leds. This way, with only some cheap transistors, common red Leds, and a 16F628 , the dream could become reality.

It’s a nice little circuit, but the diagram has a couple of mistakes. Firstly, if the transistors are indeed NPN types, then the LED symbols are the wrong way round (current flows from + to – in the direction of the arrow). Secondly, the common emitters of the six transistors should be wired to ground (there’s a link on the PCB that makes this connection). I hope the original author can make a corrected version, but I can’t spot an e-mail address on the page, to let them know.

    Hello

I am interested in making DOTS MATRIX LEDS PRODUCTS and just found one called Fancy leds. Please can you tell me if I need to programme the IC1 PIC 16F628 to operate the device to get it working also if possible please can you tell me other Web Sites where I can make other self assembling BREADBOARDS LEDS MATRIX PROJECTS without using an ARDUNION CIRCUIT BOARDS so I do not after use the internet to programme at commanding the devices for working.

    MANY THANKS
