Ian built a very excellent LED hard drive clock from this design using a PIC microcontroller. It really is a very cool display – nice. – LED Hard Drive Clock 3.5″ [via Hackosis]

I wonder what other kinds of animations you could show besides the ones in the video. Ideas?

Shadyman> something like real time pie charts from data taken by ntop ?

    Wow that is amazing.

Reminds me a bit of a Nipkow Disc, but one-dimensional. A two-dimensional thing might be fun to try (I definitely couldn’t do it…).

This is very cool and neat looking, by the way. The thing that blinks the lights adjusts the blinking rate according to the measured speed of the disk then? I couldn’t understand how the image remained stable when you slowed the disk down, but I’m guessing this is it–it doesn’t take the 5400 rpm for granted? Very, very cool.

Have you had any problems with the disk not being balanced by the slot cut in to it? very cool idea, I wonder how far this could be pushed.
