I made a few of these for a community garden years ago in Los Angeles. They didn't work out to well. The problem was that they let the piles dry out way to quickly in our arid environment. I now use bins made out of solid wood planks like the ones shown on the Fine Gardening website http://www.taunton.com/finegardening/how-to/articles/building-compost-bin.aspx?nterms=74866. Except I don't have gaps between mine. Your experience might be different if you have a lot of wet kitchen waste. My friends seem to always have really wet compost. I bet these work great in wet climates.

Looks like a good idea. People should get on this soon, for pallets are getting harder and harder to get for free.

The ones we make use four unaltered pallets held together at the corners with bailing wire. They work well, are very quick to make, and adapt to uneven terrain.
