AFAIK aviation traffic is in AM, so if you're listening to them with a radio in FM mode, you'll hear signals but they'll be hard to make out, as if you amplified a soundwave until it clipped completely.

romulusnr, part of the procedure is to defeat the AM suppression that's normally present in the FM receiver, so that the AM transmissions are audible. If you squint at the image, you can make out these instructions. It would be nice if the PDF link worked...
