Don’t give up on the stacks of your local library as a source for project ideas. “Low Tech: Fast Furniture For Next To Nothing” was last printed in 1984, but it was well worth a browse.
4 of my favorite projects:
Bike seat / frame to barstool. Kind of obvious when you see it, huh?
I’m not sure why, but I find the giant-hand-holding-hose incredibly appropriate.
PVC piping becomes an easy shelf.
Kitchen retrofitted with corrugated plastic / metal cabinet covers. Stove is on rollers and powered by propane.
Low tech, high ingenuity!

Low Tech was also a TV show that ran on Channel 4 here in the UK in the 80s.
It was the first show I ever sent off for the fact sheet from. I still have it, and yes, it’s by “Rick Ball”.
From the preface of the fact sheet;
“These plans, with drawings by Paul cox, describe how we made the furniture for ‘Low Tech’, a series of six programmes, directed by Terry Braun and produced by Georgina Denison (Malone Gill Productions), first shown on Channel Four Television in March-April 1985. The plans are easy to adapt to your own needs, likes and materials. Further information is given on the book “Low Tech” by Rick Ball and Paul Cox (Century, £6.95), published to coincide with the television series.”
It’s the show that taught me you can make anything with enough old doors and wooden pallets.
Since when does PVC pipe cost “next to nothing” ??? Spec out that bookshelf and see if it’s still an attractive alternative to wood…
Not Cool. Storing a propane tank, especially one of THAT size, in your living quarters is illegal. At least it is around here…
Some landloads won’t even allow you a gas grill on the premises, even if stored out on the “balcony”.
But, stove aside, there’s a LOAD of ideas in that drawing! My kitchen is about that same size and shape.
