Mythbusters reminder - send me your suggestions!

mythbusters.bmp

Just a reminder - I've gotten a bunch of neat suggestions to give to Jamie and Adam. The show is this Saturday; still time to send me your ideas to pass on!

Jamie and Adam of Mythbusters will be doing 2 shows in Seattle on October 4th.

Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage take you on a behind-the-scenes look at the Discovery Channel's Mythbusters with a hilarious and entertaining Inside The Scientist's Studio style presentation. They will bring stories of myths gone wrong and outtakes of segments never seen on air. They will answer questions about their unique personal chemistry and the mad science behind making one of the most popular shows on television. You give Jamie and Adam your suggestions for myths they should bust on future programs. "Behind The Scenes At Mythbusters" does not include experiments or explosions.

I'll get a chance to talk to them while they're here - I'd love to pass on myth suggestions from Make readers! Send them to me at patti@makezine.com; I'll put them together and pass them on. Make sure you include your contact info.

Bags of water to scare away flies

I live in Oklahoma and during the summer time you see lots of ziplock bags filled half way full of water with a few pennies in it. I've been told that this scares away flies. The theories include, fear of drowning, disorientation, and it looks like wasps to them.

Improvised weapons

This isn't a myth, but I would love to see an episode on improvised weapons such as modified paint ball guns, or improvised explosives.

I tried emailing but it got rejected saying my hosting company box was a known spammer!

One myth I was always interested in from years ago was that the early celluloid based billiard balls (developed to replace ivory ones) were known to explode it they were hit together hard enough. I think they also used to paint them with nitrocellulose based paints which probably didn't help.

I haven't found any actual news reports or anything other than just stories that this ever actually happened though.

Seems like the kind of thing right up their alley to test!

Does relaxing your body lessen damage you recieve

Me and my friends have discussed this and wondered if you guys could test it.

If you relax your body before you are hit with something or say impact the ground are you going to take less damage (either or both internal and external damage) then if you tensed up before the impact.

Because if you hold your arm striaght and tense toward the ground before you hit it would it not snap the bones in the arm and wrist, where as if you relax it, your arm would 'fold' and you would get alot of bruises all over your body and maybe a broken wrist.

unusual death

I read this one on wikipedia, is it possible?? William Kogut, an inmate on death row at San Quentin, decided to commit suicide using only the rudimentary tools available to him in his prison cell. He began by tearing up several packs of playing cards, giving particular focus to obtaining pieces with red ink (at the time, the ink in red playing cards contained nitrocellulose, which is flammable and when wet can create an explosive mixture), and stuffed them into a pipe. He then plugged one end of the pipe firmly with a broom handle and poured water into the other end to soak the card pieces. He then placed the pipe on a kerosene heater next to his bed and placed the open end firmly against his head. The heater turned the water into steam and eventually enough pressure built up inside the pipe so that when it burst, the explosion shot out bits of playing cards with enough force to penetrate Kogut's skull, killing him. In a suicide note, Kogut stated that he and he alone should punish himself for his crimes

Fist-Load

The 'fist-load' being a object held in the hand while making a fist. Thought to provide more power to a punch when heavy and/or stability to the bones of the hand.

Question: Does a fist-load result in a more damaging punch? Does a fist-load make it more or less likely that you'll fracture a hand bone while punching something?
