Tetherbot is a SOCKS proxy for the T-Mobile G1. Using this tool, you should be able to connect your laptop to the internet using your phone’s data connection.
It’s not a true routed connection like you might be familiar with with other devices, but browsers like Firefox or Safari can be easily configured to use SOCKS. Also included is a port forwarding utility, which will allow you to tunnel SSH or connect to services with applications that aren’t SOCKS compatible.
I don’t have a G1, but this looks like an essential tool. Has anyone tried this out that would care to comment on how well it works?

Tried it, used it, uninstalled it. It’s a clever proof of concept, but frankly too flaky and limited for any practical, day-to-day usage. A few programmers and companies claim to have all manner for true tethering solutions in the works (including tethering without the tether), but this and the lack of real navigation apps (hiking and driving) are areas that the G1 (which I otherwise adore) is really dragging its feet in.
I’ve been using it for a few weeks with my G1 and it works well and is very simple to setup for browsing. Seamless transfer from 3G to Edge to GPRS, so its great for road trips!
You can also use it with tsocks under linux, provided you cache all of the DNS entries that the program will use in /etc/hosts. (like mirrors, for using apt-get…)
The 3G coverage in the LA area is solid enough to use it for completely reasonable browsing. It’s as good as cable is when it’s bad. I recently moved to a new apartment, and used tetherbot until my ‘tubes were turned on.
it worked fine for me–the speed was the only downside when your used to cable/dsl.
If you ‘root’ the G1 (instructions all over the net) you can tether using adhoc wifi. I’ve found the speeds to be amazing and the connection to be 100% stable.
PDANet is a great tethering program that’s been around for ages in windows mobile and palm format, for those who do not have the G1. It’s also amazing in that you can avoid the Verizon 15.00 ahole tethering charge if you already are paying 30.00 for their email/web package on a smartphone. :-)
