I used to work for the largest manufacturer of residential garage door openers in the world, and this was an idea that we had to continusously tell engineering 'no we can't do that'. Personally I don't think it's that bad of an idea (assuming no kids or pets around), but the laws are set up to ban any device that allows a GDO to close while the user is not in (personally live) line of sight with the door. We considered using web cams and having the operator work over the web, but the lawyers said no.
The other idea we always said 'no' to was to have the operator open automatically when the Carbon Monoxide level became dangerous. Again, it was too much of a liability should it not perform. Stupid Lawyers!

What's the big deal here? The invention that made this happen is not the iPhone...it's the X10 which has been around for years.
