Maker Workshop - Cigar Box Guitar on Make: television

With a piece of oak, some string and a cigar box, John Park creates a three-stringed guitar. The cigar box acts as the resonating soundboard for the instrument. John then wires the guitar to a buck-fifty cassette-player amp and makes it really rock.

Geek Squad

I guess you gotta get funding where you can, but does anyone else think its hilarious that Maketv is sponsered by geek squad, something that basically encourages you to "leave it to the experts" and waste a bunch of money, even for really really simple things that you have bought at best buy? Kind of the exact opposite of the idea of Make?

Nice cigar box guitar though. If i can find a cigar box I think I'll give it a try.

Paco, in response to your comment regarding Geek Squad's sponsorhip of Make:, I'd encourage you to think of the benefit that a show like this provides to the Maker community. Without Geek Squad's support this show wouldn't exist, and millions of people couldn't see it, which would be a shame. It's fairly unconventional for a company of their size to support a series like this, but believe it or not, the Maker mindset fits very closely with their belief that everyone should know how technology works and use it to their advantage. You might want to think about the bigger picture before you criticize a company for stepping up and sponsoring a show like this.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
