The Arduino Mega in the Maker Shed is the latest micro-controller from the Arduino team. The Mega is built around the ATmega1280. It's perfect for anyone looking for more room for code or to be able to control a lot more LEDs, sensors, servos, or motors. It has 54 digital input/output pins (of which 14 can be used as PWM outputs), 16 analog inputs, 4 UARTs. Another great feature is the Arduino Mega is compatible with most shields designed for the Arduino Duemilanove or Diecimila.

They should be in soon!

I would buy but why is it so expensive? The 1280 is a bit more expensive but that makes about a difference of 6 bucks not 25?

There is more to the cost (i.e. it's a bigger board, more headers, etc) There are a lot of less expensive alternatives if you don't need all the pins. Check out the Bare Bones for <$13 in the Maker Shed!

Keep in mind some have a steep exchange rate to convert to $US. I.e. Currently close to $2=$1US, I currently am aiming at making my own boards 25 at a time. I suspect a bare bones board, with a 168smd chip soldered, and header pin holes may be interesting for some. (Offer a separate adapter to adapt to the jtag/isp pins). If you can offer it low enough, even I may be interested.

That is the beauty of open source....it's all there! Oh, and there are other countries that have the opposite exchange rate!

I might be interested in getting one of these, but WHICH shields do not work with this new one? And what software does it take to make the programs work under XP Home?

What shields are you interested in? I am happy to check. The Mega kept the layout of the right and left side headers so the shields would work.
You can download the software here: (try it out on your machine...it's free)
