Make: Talk episode #005 (the Failure episode)

Well, today’s Make: Talk was fun… while it lasted. I forgot to set the time interval for the show and it’s defaulted to cut the stream at 15 minutes. Turns out, it continues to record, so we could have gone the full 45 for the archived version, but being new to this software/service, we didn’t know that. The first 15 are worth listening to, though. We talk about happenings at MAKE, Make: Online, MakerFaire, and making in general. And you get to hear the beginnings of our Tom Igoe interview.

So sorry for the inconvenience. We’re getting better as we go along and will work the bugs out. We’ll have Tom on again next Friday, same time (12 noon PDT, 3pm EDT), so DO come back,

Funny enough, one of the main topics Dale, Goli, and I were discussing was failure, learning from failure, trying not to be embarrassed by your mistakes — falling forward. So, I’ll try and meditate on that for the rest of the day rather than feel like a complete bonehead.

Here are the Show Notes for what we discussed:

MAKE Classifieds (Closing today! Register for the Shed Gift Certificate drawing)
Fix the World! (The repair area for Maker Faire 2009 — they need volunteers)
Maker Faire, May 30-31 (Plan to come. Bring the whole family and be prepared to be inspired)
Ask MAKE (New column from Becky Stern. Send Becky your questions.)
Show us your shop (We want to see your workspace photos!)

Don’t be so hard on yourself! I enjoyed the show and look forward to more with Tom next week. Speaking of Dadaism, I found that the last few minutes of you muttering to yourself while clicking around on the computer to be soothing and good background noise for working to. :)

Yeah, just to add to the overall embarrassment, in my haste to quickly set up a new show, I forget to hang up my phone, and didn’t know the show was still being recorded. So, enjoy my muttering mind-capture.

What’s amazing is how calm I sound and the fact that I go that whole time without cursing. A first! Reminds me of those “pocket calls” (aka a “butt dial”) you when people’s mobile phones dial you without their knowledge and you hear them going about their day.

    1. John Park says:

I was secretly hoping to hear you curse up a filthy storm.

The sad thing is, I sorta was too.

        1. John Maushammer says:

I propose Gareth’s Law: All cell phone providers must insert a very loud beep every 15 seconds in to every phone call to prevent this.

          1. Gareth Branwyn says:

Oh, all of my friends have cool laws named after them: Godwin’s Law, McKean’s Law, etc. And this is the rule I get? I think I’ll stop embracing my failure now :-)

At least I’ll always have a rule: The Kenny Rogers Rule.

  3. Shane Dorval says:

You guys should consider making the show longer to give more time for the best show ever!
