Lucky for me on my last day of work at The Bakery, the 55-gallon honey barrel I'd been waiting for was finally empty. Getting laid off wasn't going to stand in the way of my dream to make my own barbecue.

No, you don't have to pay, you just have to look at one step at a time if you're not signed in. If you're signed in (which you need to be to comment, etc. anyway), you can see all steps on one page for featured instructables, like this one, for a week after it's been featured. It's kinda the same model as Flickr: upgraded features for upgraded accounts, but it's still free to use.
