Crocheted Bioshock Big Daddy is Poseable, Illuminated, Adorable

Crochet is generally thought of as a peaceful pastime, making cute “old-timey” figures and patterns out of string. When combined with more modern subjects, like Bioshock’s “Big Daddy” character and lighting, things get a bit more interesting. As creator Nichole puts it, this technique could be called “engineering meets crochet!”

Besides some crochet skills that are likely beyond most of us, there are a few other interesting techniques used. The battery is housed inside an M&M’s case disguised as a tank on the back, as well as the switches, which allow these lights to alternate between yellow and red. There is a zipper on the bottom of the the tank which when unzipped reveals these switches in a convenient upward-facing orientation.

Both types of lights are embedded in the hot-glue filled head, which would be an extremely basic form of additive manufacturing, AKA 3D-printing. This crochet-masterpiece uses wire for a skeleton, allowing it to be posed for photos, or for whatever other reason you come up with.

I’m not sure why there are sharks in the first image’s background. They do look cool, and if you find that interesting, you might want to make your own “Left Shark” out of paper, as seen here.
