OK, stop. Before you read any further, we need to come to a legal understanding.
I, the author, and we, the MAKE blogging staff, as well as all of you, the readers, understand that this widget is only to be used in a car that is stationary, out of gear, and well clear of traffic. It is not designed, marketed, or sold for use in a moving vehicle, and indeed anyone who would do so is manifestly irresponsible and dumb as a post. Everyone with the sense to operate a car or a laptop, or, indeed, even to read this blog, understands that. THEREFORE: Commenters griping about how hyping this product is tantamount to genocide will be summarily vaporized by our orbital lasers.
And now that we've reached an understanding, I can talk about why I think this is cool.
- It's incredibly useful, as anyone who's ever had to use a laptop in a car for more than a few seconds will recognize.
- It's inexpensive and easy to manufacture, and could be easily remade in the material and style of your choice, for your own use or as an easy, thoughtful, and useful handmade gift.
- It's clever! It does a lot with a little. Whoever thought up that curvy-slot-with-ears shape deserves a lollipop, at the very least.
I rest my case. If you're still mad, well, remember those lasers.

Hyping this product is tantamount to genocide. Screw your lasers. I can liquidate every trace of your impudent existence from my computer instantly.

This would be good for the last minute portfolio/résumé check in the parking lot before a job interview. I could have used one of these over the past couple of weeks.

That is stupidly dangerous. I cannot believe that this would be posted. And I don't see any lasers that would certainly aaaaahhhhhrrrrgggghhhh.

Orbital lasers, no one told me you guys had orbital lasers. How do I get on the pissed off user list.
By the way I would use this wheel in my car. ya bunch of sissy's.

Are my eyes (and basic logic) deceiving me, or is your picture upside down? The desk as you pictured it would drop off the wheel as soon as any weight is put on it. If the picture was turned around 180 degrees, it would make sense.
Another clue is that the wheel paddles (audio controls?) are now pictured at the top half of the wheel rather than the bottom half where they usually belong.
On another note, I can't see how anyone can complain about the danger of using this while actually driving. Nothing can be balanced on the desk if the wheel is turned.... so it's inconceivable that it'll be used in other than a stationary position...

.... it is up side down. However, it is likely that some clever fret saw work would allow a board to hang from the bottom of the wheel

No, the picture is right side up, but it is admittedly confusing, because the wheel, as you rightly observe, is upside down. I've posted additional manufacturer's photos to make it clearer how the dealie fits on the thingamabob. Note that the steering wheels are rotated 180 degrees in each case. The designer's intent may actually be that the desk can only be fit to an upside down steering wheel to prevent any possibility that it might be used while the vehicle is moving. And whether or not that's really true, the manufacturer is only going to show it in that position to protect themselves against the accusation that they're somehow endorsing in-motion use.

I was running late to this job interview and I needed to remember what the heck I put on my resume.

Probably the worst thing about using this product while driving, and the reason that hyping it is tantamount to genocide, is that because you turn the wheel upside down to get a nice clear area for the desk the car would naturally be doughnuting for as long as the tray was in place.
That in itself is probably a sufficient safety feature to discourage using it while in motion.

Do they make one to fit the square steering wheel of an Austin Allegro?

I like the photo of the burger and soda. I recently went to a SONIC for the first time and, thinking it was similar to a STEWARTS ROOTBEER STAND was suprized and angered that they didn't have trays for your food, just handed me a bag and said thank you (well, didn't actually say thank you). I wish I had one of these!

the Steering wheel is upside down because you should only use this when you are parked and i think it will only work when your steering wheel is upside down as it will not fit with the Steering wheel up its good because it prevent people from driving with it in the first place besides i think it should be againts the law to drive and eat anyway.
