I'm no engineer but it seems that a filter that's designed to take out macroscopic particulates in an aquarium wouldn't be that effective with smoke. It may disperse the smoke to make is less visible but..

Seems like the fan is too weak and small to be effective. I'm building one that's powered by a wall wart running outputting 14v. Was thinking of using an adjustable voltage regulator to drop the volts down to 12v but the fan seems too weak at 12. Don't wanna burn out the fan either. I'll probably need a bigger wall wart cuz I was planning on using a LM317T voltage regulator and I read that the power supply should be at least 1.5v over the voltage it will be reducing down to.
