One could put one end of the blade into an empty ballpoint pen tube with some J-B QuickWeld for a permanent quality tool with a good handle, for a fraction more time invested in making the tool.

I wrote an instructable on how to make pumpkin carving tools, using scroll saw blades mounted in wood dowel rods.
But, if you don't want to buy wood dowels, duct tape will work fine, too. ;)

My wife and I figured this out a couple of years ago, but it seemed so obvious we hadn't thought it was worth posting anywhere. If you have large X-acto handles sitting around, you can actually jam the scrollsaw blade into one of those, which provides a very comfortable grip. Add a keyhole saw for longer cuts and an awl to poke starter holes, and you're ready to carve designs as elaborate as the pumpkin skin will allow.
