Universe ring

To22 created something nearly perfect. A continuous ring, delicately proportioned, beautifully polished and seemingly flawless. There is only one tiny imperfection. A speck, no larger than a piece of dust. At a glance, it is barely noticeable. Upon close examination, it appears intentional and more clearly defined. Only magnification reveals the actual object set within the miniature interior. It is a model of the known universe. Inspired by the writing of Stephen Hawking and loosely based on the anthropic theory to22 puts our daily pursuits into perspective and reminds us that we are always a part of something bigger.

In other news, after seeing this De Beers inflated the price of Universe to an astronomical amount and are having string theorist slaves in horrible working conditions make new universes around the clock.

This seems more like a computer rendering of a potential product and not an actual object. It’s a neat concept, though. I’d love to see someone actually pull it off.

    I agree with GiantEye

concept, image, yup – i did not post anything saying it was a physical object yet.

Kind of sounds like its implying a real object. “In these renderings to22…” seems an appropriate comment to add.

It’s all fine and well getting defensive about it but if you make a post saying “To22 created something” you lose the ability to say you didn’t say anything about them creating it.

The proper thing is to put your hands up and say “yeah, good point” or “that’s true but it’s still a nice idea”. The weasel thing is saying you didn’t say anything that suggests it’s not real and you were wrong to take that route.

@Stephen – as you can see in the post, it’s a quote from the site. i did not post or say anything saying it was a physical object yet.

I don’t think it’s a massive deal if something is a nice picture or a real object but To22 did not make you copy the bit of their press material that talks about creating something into your post. It’s a shame that you’ve chosen be defensive about it and blaming it on someone else rather than just saying “yes, I did put that quote in my post” and then maybe saying something about it. That might lead to quite an interesting discussion about if it’s really important that something is physical or if it’s ok for it to be a concept etc. Saying “it’s a quote from the site”, although true, is just passing blame. First rule of blogging: if it’s in your post, you’re responsible for putting it there. You’re not responsible for what commentators say, just your own bits.

You’re representing the Make: brand when you post and comment on the blog and ‘it’s not my fault, I just copied it’ isn’t (I’d think) the Maker ethos that Make: stands for.

          1. Phillip Torrone says:

@Stephen – it’s a quote if that wasn’t clear, but now that it’s been said and re-said in the comments, i hope it’s more clear now. if you’d like to discuss this more please email me.

there is an interesting discussion here that folks are having about the project, join in :)

“To22 created something nearly perfect”, we take issue with the use of the word “created”, To22. Drawing a perfect virtual circle is not much of a feat. I do like the idea though and want it.

    @GiantEye and MisterPeepers-

Thanks! The way it was written, and the post script after, I also had the impression this was a ‘made’ object, not a rendering.

    On “To22”-
“To22 is a joint design collaborative with the aim of provoking new ways of thinking. To22 is more interested in contributing inspiration and awareness than in creating new objects.”

So I guess the intent wasn’t so much to actually make a ring, but to create the idea.

    Heh heh… love it.

You didn’t create a ring. You just created a really nice picture of one. There is a big difference between drawing an object really well, and actually creating one.

If DeBeers had some slaves working on this, at least there would be a physical object.

  8. bob says:

Great ring but where can I get it in my size…

In 500 years this ring will be a joke

    500 years from now:…

Dan993572: Hey bob what is that?

Bob: It is what we thought the universe looked like 500 years ago.

Dan993572: hahaha wow were we stupid or what.

    Bob:?

Dan993572: adding “or what” is another saying from 500 years ago.

Bob: wow we were pretty dumb

Made a mechanical ring for my wife. Not a concept, real object. Opens up to reveal hidden diamond.
