Unfortunately, without the paperclip already in hand, MacGyver was unable to open the packaging and the world ended suddenly in a ball of fire.

I'm pretty sure it's a photoshop job.
found a "real" one on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/arkangel/1038009182/ She says her friend had to make it from scratch.

Nope, not real, the cardboard packaging is from the MacGyver toy.The original toy was even posted here on the Make site some time back.

To answer the original question... yes, paper clips are real. I know, I've used several of them in my lifetime.
