I’ve always felt that this is a big part of why some people can’t ever seem to learn how to use computer competently (especially in the middle-aged and older groups). They are so afraid that they’re going to break/delete something that they never allow themselves to relax and get the experience they need from just messing around a lot.

I don’t get so many nay-sayers with my projects now since I have done enough that people who know me know when I say I am going to do something they don’t doubt I can. But I get really annoyed at people who always say ‘you must have too much time on your hands’. It’s a comment from people who just don’t get it and can’t even think of anything intelligent to say.

You also make less mistakes as you get more experienced of course and I found I have learned how to anticipate and design around them. When I make something I am always thinking of different approaches when I am trying something new or something I am not sure about. I always have alternatives in case something doesn’t work out how I think it will. I try not to design myself into a corner.
