Kyle Wiens, of iFixit, sent us the link to this photo essay from the UK Guardian showing Egyptian protesters improvising helmets in the heat of battle. Protesters are also rerouting power from street lights to recharge their cell phone. One twitter user jokingly dubbed this “Maker Faire Cairo.” Not to make light of what is a horrible and scary situation, but it is always amazing what sorts of “street tech” we humans are capable of improvising (for good or ill) under the most dire circumstances. [Thanks, Kyle]

Reminds me of the Vietnam episode of “Top Gear.” Hammond, the smallest of the group, has no problem getting a motorcycle helmet, while May and Clarkson have to have theirs custom made in a Vietnamese metalshop. Due to a translational error, Clarkson wears a galvanized steel bucket on his head, while May wears a colander.

Although they are smiling in those photos, those people had the most ruff night ever, they have been attacked by police thugs that through molotof, rock and fire life bullets for 15 hours, they stood firm in the ground and would not allow them to regain control of Tahrir – liberation – square in middle of Cairo,
I am proud to be Egyptian, and shame on me I was not there to die with them
