MAKE Magazine Available at Occupy Wall Street Library

Josh Glenn alerted me to this photo of the library at Occupy Wall Street. A copy of MAKE is on the table. Josh is the co-author of another publication available to the folks at Occupy Wall Street: it’s called The Wage Slave’s Glossary, and is illustrated by Seth (who has also illustrated for MAKE!).

From the picture I see MAKE magazine is located near the “Workers World” newspaper.    IMHO I would not be bragging about being on the same table as a self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist newspaper.

Think of how many died during man-made famines of communism such as the Holodomor famine (7.5 million).

And remember the man-made famine from Mao’s Great Leap Forward program in China killed from 32.5 million to 46 million people in just three years.    That’s 5-7 times the number of deaths from of THE Holocaust.

My father-in-law was chased down by the Chinese communists… his own brother tried to kill him.  He escaped to Hong Kong.  Many decades later his communist brother visited and had the nerve to ask for money.  Seems communism made him and others very very poor.

I don’t pretend capitalists are angels but for crying out loud how many people must die and lose all their rights under communism before people realize how plain wrong it is??

I really can’t see how MAKE can brag about this.

It’s also next to Harper’s and The New Yorker.  Now are you going to say that those publisher’s should hide in shame because they’re on the same table as a “communist rag”?

The point of a library is to provide a large array of literature and reading material to a population.  I’m guessing that these were “donated” and for the personal use of the members.

Copies of some of the newspapers may have been donated by the publisher, but MAKE didn’t provide the copy: someone felt that MAKE was good enough to donate to this library.  Does your public library have a subscription to MAKE?  Maybe you should buy it one.

PS: Your father lived in Hong Kong? I wouldn’t brag about living on the same continent as all those Commie Chinese. :-p

If Harper’s and The New Yorker bragged about it on their website I would post the same as I did here.  Perhaps you did not fully understand my post.

As for Hong Kong…  until recently (1997) it was not under Chinese rule.   Even after the handover Hong Kong still operates under the “one country, two systems” rule.  They are somewhat autonomous from the mainland.

Might I also add that Hong Kong has the highest economic freedom ranking in the world.   China, which is part of that other ‘system’, doesn’t even show up in the rankings.   Hopefully that is changing though.

And MAKE isn’t under rule of “a self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist newspaper”.

My tongue-in-cheek point about Hong Kong was that physical location with respect to another entity does not mean anything.  In fact, I’d forgotten that Hong Kong reverted to Chinese rule.

That MAKE highlights a sighting of their magazine in a current news context should not bring shame, just like I’d expect them to post if there was a picture of a politician reading MAKE no matter what their political affiliation.

Wow. You serious? What if that ‘political affiliation’ just happens to be directly responsible for reducing freedom around the world and for a  large number of deaths?

Look I simply said I would not post this pic up as something to brag about.   You disagree with me and I disagree with you.

However if the members of the Worker’s World had their way… I’d be put up against the fence for my “thought crimes against the state”.   Sure you can say that isn’t what their goal is… but when has communism been implemented where millions were killed and the rest subjugated?

At this point, I’m honestly starting to wonder if this is an elaborate parody.

Second, I didn’t blame MAKE.  Re-read my post. Er… never mind… I can see you didn’t read it the first time and your post was a knee jerk reaction.   If you had read it you might have seen why I felt so strongly about the pic to make a comment.

Third….  Given MAKE’s “be nice” policy I’ll hold off saying anything else.

I do not believe my original comment fell into any of those categories.  If you believe they did you could have pointed out where I had broken the policy and I would have corrected my statement.

Instead… you called my wife’s family dysfunctional over an incident that happened in 1949.

I find your hijacking of this thread to be quite offensive. It took me a long time to see the photo of the newspaper, but I guess I would notice it too if I knew that it is part of their plan to one day put me up against the fence for thought crimes.

I apologize for calling your wife’s family dysfunctional.

The library has a copy of Atlas Shrugged. It’s under one of the table legs, thanklessly bearing the burdens of the world and helping keep things from going Wobbly.

Well, that’s the only thing Atlas Shrugged is good for. Either that, or being turned into recycling pulp.

What many Makers realize is that today there is a disconnect between the state of technology and the state of the US economy.

Technologically, we have the internet and computers and robots and biotechnological breakthroughs and solar energy and 3D printing to meet all the wants and needs of every human on Earth.

Yet, economically, even here in the wealthiest nation on Earth, we have millions of people losing their jobs, homes, pensions, and health care.

We wonder where all the wealth is going, and we see the government spending trillions of dollars to bail out Wall Street.  We look at Wall Street, and we see investment bankers passing so-called ‘financial instruments’ back and forth, charging commissions and taking bonuses until the government money is gone, whereupon they demand more, proclaiming that they are doing ‘The Lord’s Work.’

Dare to question the system, and you are called a socialist or a communist or a welfare bum.  The rhetorical tactics of name-calling and guilt-by-association are meant to shut down any kind of discussion feedback.  But as every Maker knows, a system without feedback will eventually go off course.  Even worse is a system that permits only positive feedback, because then it will go off-scale and crash.  An economic system that has no accountability has no way to call itself back from folly, and will crash, too.

It seems to me, then, that the protesters are trying to keep the economic system known as capitalism from crashing, while the alleged capitalists on Wall Street are interested only in generating the biggest positive-feedback financial bubble of all time, which will predictably lead to the biggest economic crash of all time.

And then it will be good to know somebody who can make real, concrete, and tangible things with their own hands.
