Hackerspaces in Space: A Kickstarter Project

Let’s inspire the world and young future scientists with this Kickstarter project! Space is within anybody’s reach.

Workshop 88, Chicago’s only suburban hackerspace, hosted a successful inaugural Hackerspaces in Space competition in 2010. Hackerspaces and ragtag groups from around the world participated by sending weather balloons with payloads into near space hoping to capture pictures of the Earth’s horizon.

This year, Hackerspaces in Space aims to expand participation by taking winning designs from the 2011 competition and making them available in kits to K-12 institutions for educational endeavors with near space weather balloons. Kits will be provided with instructions and guidelines so students can engineer their own balloon, launch and retrieve it and analyze data.

Funds raised from Kickstarter will help to fund the the first batch of educational kits to be given away in a random drawing to K-12 institutions in order to cultivate interest in private space exploration as well as to help market and expand the Hackerspaces in Space movement.

MAKE Visits L.A.’s CRASH Space

So, no surprise, hackerspaces are incubators for crazy ideas. Our EIC Mark Frauenfelder visited CRASH Space looking for material for the magazine.

Make Magazine is the ultimate printed resource for folks looking for Do-It-Yourself projects that generally involve electronics, crafts, and hands-on science. So when Editor in Chief Mark Frauenfelder suggested the idea of having a night where Crash Space would host a Show and Tell of projects people have been working on -AND- the presenters could score a paid gig writing about the project for Make, we jumped at the chance!

Friday night, we had a dozen projects to show off and Crash Space members presented them in a fun discussion format guided along by a 10 minute timer. Mark found all of them to be possible candidates for various sections of the magazine. A feature article, full DIY write-ups, one-page overviews, projects in three steps, and a potential new section entitled “ReMake” were all exciting possibilities.

The night was an awesome example of the diversity and creativity people have in devoting their time and energy to a project. We explored a side of invention that includes the practical, the instructional, the important, the ground-breaking, and just plain cool. I hope to see these projects covered in future issues of Make. But more than that, I am excited to see how others discover, build, and expand on these projects and go on to make their own.

T-Shirt Hacking Workshop at Toronto’s HackLab.to

Bring your old t-shirts and let’s make them fresh again!

Radiation Workshop at Philadelphia’s Hacktory

The Hacktory will be holding a Radiation Workshop Saturday, October 22nd, from 1-5pm.

With the recent nuclear events and Philly’s own glowing water problem, we’ve all been questioning radiation and safety. So, we decided to bring in some experts from EFMR to help figure out the facts and to offer some hands-on work. EFMR was formed after a Three Mile Island incident to provide radiation monitoring in the area, and it has grown to include education and citizens monitoring programs.

Barry Brosey and Rodger Granlund will be on hand to explain the fundamentals of radiation, both manmade and background, and how it is measured. As for gadgets, we will learn how to use the Radalert GM meter (used by citizens) and the newer fancy schmancy ST-10 GM counter which operates with a personal computer as a continuous monitor. There will be comparisons of past nuclear events and discussions on protection. So sign up now, because you know you won’t hear about it from the media. $30 includes snack.

Also, the Hacktory will be offering an Intro to Arduino class this Saturday, 10/8, from 10am-4pm.
