Beautiful Breathing Bot

If you’re anywhere near NYC before the end of the year, I really recommend a visit to the Asia Society Museum on Park Avenue in Manhattan. On display until December 31st is Guardian of the Hole by Korean artist U-Ram Choe. A creature lays on the floor, beached on a pile of sand, while dozens of mechanical wings reach up into the air. The entire sculpture, which Choe refers to as an “anima-machine,” moves and breathes, although the motions are very subtle. You can read an interview with the artist and see his work online here.

Thanks, Nick! You can also find some of U-Ram Choe’s early drawings of the creature (and the ancient Indian work of art that inspired it) at Asia Blog:

Its not often that shiny shiny metal moves me to emotion,
but the combination of the eloquent music and sublime technical skill and attention to detail by this artist took my breath away. Deeply in awe.

    Intricate, beautiful, and slightly creepy.

Very nice.  At the beginning of the video the entire sculpture was shown, but it was still.  I would really like to see the piece, as a whole in action.
