Kit-A-Day Giveaway: Free MakerBot!

Kit-A-Day Giveaway: Free MakerBot!

We’re giving away amazing kits from our new Make: Ultimate Kit Guide EVERY DAY — thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, including MakerBots!

To celebrate the release of our latest publication, the Make: Ultimate Kit Guide 2012 (and its companion website), we’re giving away one of the cool kits reviewed in the issue each day during the holiday season.

To kick things off, we’re giving away a MakerBot Thing-o-Matic (a $1,300 value), featured on the cover of the Ultimate Kit Guide. Here’s Make: Labs intern Eric Chu’s review of Thing-O-Matic from the issue:

If you want to get into 3D printing but don’t know where to start, the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic Kit is the way to go. It’s a complete kit, so you need no additional parts, and a large user community can back you up if problems pop up (not to mention Thingiverse, where you can find awesome open source designs). It took me about 20 hours to build the Thing-O-Matic and start printing, and I improved its accuracy with more tuning, calibrating, and tinkering with settings in the ReplicatorG software. If you have any trouble, read the discussion at the bottom of every build step. I’ve since 3D-printed many fun and handy things (everyone loves a 3D-printed gift!) and the MakerBot is now by far the most-used machine at Make: Labs.

To be eligible for today’s giveaway, all you have to do is leave a comment below in this post. The entry period for today’s prize will be until 11:59pm PST today. We’ll choose one person at random, you’ll be notified by email and you’ll have 48 hours to respond. The winners list will be kept on the Giveaway landing page. That’s it! No purchase necessary or anything else to do. Please leave only one comment per post. You can enter as many giveaways as you like until you win. This giveaway is for US residents only. See the Kit-A-Day Giveaway landing page for full sweepstakes details and Official Rules.

Note: Commenting is closed for this giveaway. See the Kit-A-Day page for today’s giveaway (announced every day at 9am PST).

I had the chance a few weeks ago to play around with a friend’s Thing-O-Matic. Once you start using it, you begin to ‘see’ all sort of uses for it. I don’t have access to the machine anymore, and I’m starting to feel withdrawal symptoms. It’s sort of like when a musician has their amplifier break down. You can’t manifest your creativity into the world anymore. It’s a sad day… for the world.

I’ve been designing 3-D objects like crazy in an effort to cope.
(Help me, Gareth Branwyn; you’re my only hope.)

  722. Lochie Ferrier says:

Hello my name is Lochie Ferrier and I make things. I am 15 years old and write a blog at http://lochieferrier.com/ .

I teach robotics at and attend in Year 9 Canberra Grammar School in Australia. I would use a 3D printer to design and manufacture small model planes and rockets as well as electronics enclosures and other small hobbyist parts. And of course the multitude of other everyday items that you can make with one. I could also use it to make PCBs using this method: http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2009/11/30/pcb-making-on-a-makerbot/ . As you know, there is almost an unlimited amount of things that you can make with a 3D printer so to list them here would be a waste of time.I have been following makerbot since day one (back in the days of the cupcake) but have never had enough money to build one. I have watched every episode of Makerbot TV and read every blog post and I am constantly amazed by the work they put in. I am currently designing a small low-cost CNC out of lego as I don’t have enough money. That’s how desperate I am. Attached is a pic of the Lego CNC. It is currently at V1.0 and I am working on the first round of open-source documentation as we speak. It is the first ever open source lego CNC.
I am currently implementing 3D printing at my school (Canberra Grammar in Canberra, ACT, Australia.) Having a 3D printer to show them would help get this off to a great start. Please, please, please give me this opportunity. I will not let you down.2014ferril@cgs.act.edu.aulochieferrier@gmail.com@lochieferrier:twitter  on twitterand of course, http://lochieferrier.com/Thanks,Lochie Ferrier

A Designer’s wet dream, as a student, you would have to wait for days in a row behind a CNC machine, trying to find an empty slot to build your Prototype in, as an employee, you would have to convince your boss to buy a pretty expensive machine, or outsource for double that, and as a house-father, well, you would just have to buy new toys everytime they break… NO MORE of all that (even though I am not a father… yet) Take my humble comment into consideration (sounds like begging right?), it will be worth a very detailed and uberly funny Promo Video wouldn’t it? (manipulation / positive blackmailing) all that for a few 3d-printed chessboard pieces :-)
