Natebu creates 3D feedback and reflections in LED light

"Natebu", a project by André Huber and Roland Broennimann of the University of Applied Sciences in north western Switzerland, attempts to mirror motion in a matrix of LEDs on a public surface. They recently showed the project at the DIY Festival in Zurich.

Sony's pet TV

Make Pt0177
Photo P01 05
Here's one of the artsy Sony projects that will likely never go beyond the concept phase, but very cool to think about... a little pet-like TV (reminds me of the Sony Rolly on my desk!) -

The concept of "Little TV that Rest in Your Hand" inspired an organic form (like a living creature) and friendly appearance. To complete the effect, we chose video patterns and an interface design that reflects thinking outside the box of conventional TVs. Although the color bar pattern recalls familiar television color bars, animation distinguishes it from an ordinary video pattern. The face and eye patterns make the set more lifelike, for a product that seems even more like a little friend.

To switch to the pattern, squeeze the set's soft body to press an embedded switch-another invitation to enjoy touching the set.

Desktop in real life

desktopexe.jpg

This is one of my favorite projects from 1999. Ola Pehrson's "Desktop" consists of a blue wall with Windows 95 icons hung vertically on the left side, and a camera pointing at the wall. On the desk is a monitor displaying the feed from the camera on its screen so it looks like an actual desktop. Pretty brilliant and simple way of materializing a Windows display.

I visited the new New York Times building, in the lobby they have an amazing installation called "Moveable type" - it displays realtime and archived information from the NYTimes, it also makes manual typewriter, teletype machine and rotary phone noises while the vacuum florescent displays display away... Here are some photos - Link & The Moveable Type - installation @ the New York Times building - Link (video).

Dekochari art bikes

I seem to have missed this in Japan, the video is excellent! Pink Tentacle writes -

For decades in Japan, dekochari (deko means “decoration” and chari means “bicycle”) have been the ride of choice for hardcore dekotora fans that are too young to drive. Modeled after Japan’s celebrated art trucks, dekochari typically feature large front bumpers, ornate luggage racks, rear-mounted boxes that resemble truck trailers, colorful paint jobs, lots of chrome, and sophisticated electric light displays. This video pieces together random night scenes from Dekochari Yarou, a documentary that profiles a few dekochari enthusiasts and their custom rides. The soundtrack is “Ichiban-boshi Blues” (sung by Bunta Sugawara and Kinya Aikawa), the theme song from the Torakku Yarou movie series that sparked Japan’s dekotora craze in the ’70s.

Profile ring

Contplt10 Xl
Very cool ring made from the profile of someone, this might make a fun (re)make if you make rings... -

CONTURA - a ring that is made from the profile of the carrier or the presenter. An original in the best sense. You submit a profile photo along with ring size to Fitzsu and we send the information to Germany to be custom made. CONTURA is simple and easy to identify. There is hardly a ring on the market that is more personal, more individual, and more emotional than the CONTURA. Take your loved one's profile with you everywhere you go- who could want more?

Jason Salavon's "374 Farben" -

This project, a large light box, contains all 374 pages of the 2007 IKEA catalogue, each simplified to a rectangle of pure color and arranged them left-to-right , top-to-bottom.

With an estimated 175 million copies distributed in 2006, the IKEA catalogue is thought to have surpassed the Bible as the most published print-work in the world.

Interactive art project comments on self-absorption on the Internet

raaf.jpg

"Take the Call" by Chicago-based media artist Sabrina Raaf, attempts to address the phenomenon of self-promotion and absorption on the Internet. The project monitors ambient sound levels in the space to affect the image of a large flag on an LED matrix that flutters to open and close a large eye (on the screen), that nervously surveys the room. The project was inpired by dozens of videos the artist found on YouTube of people filming themselves staring intently at the camera.

Satellite dishes add fine art to bad TV

dish.jpg

This project called "District Art" took place in an Arabic section of the Netherlands town of Utrecht where after noticing the amount of satellite dishes in the city, designers attempted to bring the population closer to each other. By adding decorative stickers to the dishes, each previously ugly eyesore was transformed into an icon of sorts. Next up would be to make them into computer icons and turn the block into a cluttered desktop.

Plate mail butchers apron outfit...

Kaden (author of Eccentric Cubicle) wrote in with a charming tale of something he made for his wife...

Heya, Phil... Lemme tell you about my wife.

I met Kaia 'The Sourceress' Howe about 10 years ago. The woman has more cool stuff than any 5 humans have a right to own, and a tool fetish that makes mine look like a casual interest. She has a habit of disappearing into one of her closets for a 5 minute rummage, emerging twith anything from a battered cardboard box to a bright and shiny Zero Haliburton fitted with a milspec biometric lock. She'll offhandedly open the container in question and pull out something rare and trippy with a WTF factor solidly in the mid 9s...

Spiral Star art made in Excel

Hypocycloid
Excel for artists... -

Sometimes, you don’t need complicated stuff to get beautiful images. Sometimes it’s easily done. Today’s Math Art was generated on Microsoft Excel. Yes, you read that right. Microsoft Excel.... Remember those spirographs that you played with when you were a kid? If you’ve ever drawn using a spirograph, you’ve drawn a hypocycloid. A hypocycloid is a roulette of two circles, where the one being drawn on is the one inside (think the spirograph). If the outer circle is the one being drawn it’s called a epicycloid. The variable that defines the shape of the hypocycloid is the radii of both circles.
