Web based sun dial

A digital sun dial - "The sun.dial is an internet-based installation project that fosters a sense of shared global space and time. The principle system consists of twelve LCD displays suspended from an overhead apparatus in an outward-facing ring. This circular display is the hub of a world-wide input system. Each screen displays the information from one of twelve webcams located at intervals around the world. Each camera faces upward, capturing only the sky in each location. This creates a light gradient ring that displays the current state of the sky's light at points around the globe. When it is dawn in one screen, it is noon a few steps over, and nightfall a few steps down from that. A connection is created between the hosting site, where sun.dial is located, and the locations capturing the light of the sun. The piece is in a way a digital incarnation of the astrolabes and orreries that were the beginnings of technology's global perspective. " [via] - Link.

Handmade wooden USB drives

Hand carved USB drives from Africa - "...designer Pedro Alegria, introduced USB flash card design to local craftsmen, all of whom had never seen or heard of such things before. The end result merges traditional "forgotten" craft with hot technology on the rise, sustaining the working families' needs and offering unique craft-designs to the masses. The project is currently seeking large orders to maintain and increase production." [via] - Link.

Junkboat fleet - The Miss Rockaway Armada

The Miss Rockaway Armada is a theater group building a floating fleet of junk/recycled boats, taking then down the Mississippi holding workshops and performing along the way - "We're building this boat entirely from salvaged materials. Wood dumpstered and begged from construction sites, buckets of screws donated by kind crew members, rope found on the sidewalk, and blocks of foam from both coasts...Our engines are a work of genius (thanks Chicken and Anton!): 2 Volkswagen Rabbit diesel engines converted to run on waste vegetable oil (used fryer grease!) will power the propellor. The motors will have an alternator from a police car that'll keep our deep cell batteries charged (so we can have things like lights)." [via] - Link.

Slip ring power connector in action

Stephan writes - "I just finished the show in which I used the slip ring connectors. They worked great for my purposes (fluorescent light tubes). I had them running for about two hours straight and no power cut outs. This means the rotatable connection is pretty solid. I also tried running an mono audio signal through the rings but it turns out the electrical connection creates too much noise and the audio gets cut up." - Link.

Steam powered iMac

The Guardian has a write up about The Steam Powered Internet Machine exhibit (an iMac)... - "...Rob Tufnell is using an Apple Mac powered by the engine. For this is the Steam Powered Internet Machine: the latest deeply eccentric project from Turner-prizewinning artist Jeremy Deller and his collaborator Alan Kane. "We were thinking about something that connects the industrial revolution and the digital revolution," said Deller. Kane added: "They are worlds apart but there's also a proximity. The steam age and the digital age are not so far apart."" [via] - Link.

Control Freaks - turning objects into game controllers

This is neat, a project that turns any objet into a game controller - "Control Freaks are devices that attach to everyday objects, turning them into interactive game play objects. When the Control Freak attaches to a host object, its movement, vibration or sound, can be translated into control functionality for a game. The situation, location and behavior of the host, are all enablers for opportunistic play experience. The Control Freak device therefore enables any object in any situation to become the focus of play adventure." [via] - Thanks Pattmyn! Link.

DIY Video game character mosaics

Houdini writes - "...Knowing nothing about how to do tiles mosaic and where to by the stuff, I started to do some searchs on google image to find an appropriate drawing to convert into mosaic. With a bit of luck I knew I could find one that will exactly fit my wills : not too small, and not to large. A 25x25 tiles mosaic was my absolute limit as it's already involving 625 tiles. I finally failed in google images, and before starting to convert a bigger image into a smaller one, I did some extra effort to find an original sprite with the size I wanted (pixel design is so well done that I couldn't expect to get the same quality by myself). I finally found the exact 18x18 pixels image I wanted, in a backup of a nintendo GameBoy Advance cartrige. I had to extract the content and one particular design on a splash screen fitted my needs perfectly." - Link.
