DIY Vampire Fangs - Weekend Projects Podcast

mp4 | hd-appletv | youtube | blip | vimeo hd experiment | itunes | pdf

Have you ever wanted to suck the blood out of an innocent's neck? If so, then this is the project for you! Eric Skiff came over to help me make vampire fangs! Eric has made these for years using dental acrylic, but recently figured out that acrylic for nails is basically the same material. The great thing about this project is that you'll learn how to mold three different types of materials! We're going to make a negative mold of your teeth out of alginate, a positive mold out of your teeth out of plastic, and then the fangs are made out of a two part acrylic that you'd use to make fake fingernails!

Killer-cool LED hat

As Hacked Gadgets says, you probably won't have time to create this amazing LED hat for this Halloween, but if you start soldering now, you might have it done for next Halloween, or if you hurry, next Mardi Gras. The results look worth the effort.

DIY trip wire detection - 80,000 cans of Silly String

Sillystring
Interesting use of Silly String... -

A New Jersey mom's labor of love has overcome its last hurdle. Marcelle Shriver collected 80,000 cans of Silly String and had planned to send them all to Iraq, where troops use the substance to detect tripwires on deadly insurgent bombs. After an initial shipment made it to Baghdad in January without a hitch, Shriver suddenly hit the hard wall of military bureaucracy. One problem: Silly String is an aerosol and it's considered a hazardous material, meaning only certain companies can ship it. Thom Campbell, one of the founders of Capacity LLC, a shipping company experienced in hazardous materials, stepped up to the plate yesterday and decided to help out, shipping off the cans.

GOOD Magazine - Project 007

Project7 Mh
Make editor and publish Dale Dougherty lent a hand to GOOD Magazine for their recent High tech/Low tech issue. He came up with the idea for their Project page, a bimonthly experiment in open source creativity. The assignment? Document a craft or trade in danger of extinction. By way of example, Dale visited the workshop of letterpress printer Patrick Reagh and captured what he saw there. Suspended computer

sky-puter.jpg

The Sky Puter is essentially a computer without a case, while all components are suspended from the ceiling with a combination of coat hangers, cat5, and cat3 cable. Your airflow doesn't really get any better than this. To me it looks like a still frame of a computer exploding. - [via] Link.

Change the "Ready" message on HP printers to say "Insert coin"

Insert Coin
Yaakov writes -

This little perl program allows you to set the "Ready Message" on HP printers to whatever you'd like. (if you want to run it under Windows, and don't know how, read this.) I wrote it after coming across the command in an HPPJL (HP Printer Job Language) reference manual I was reading for some reason that I now forget.

Well, of course I couldn't ignore such an opportunity, and it turns out to be a lot of fun. You can think up your own funny, confusing or scary messages. My personal favorite is "INSERT COIN" which fits perfectly on the small LCDs. You can even sit in sight of the printer and change the message while watching the reaction of your victim. Don't be surprised, though, if a large fraction don't even notice.

Make an RFID Sheilding Wallet out of Trash

Fs6Pdo0F7Pcrz4A.Medium

This has got to be the coolest RFID shielding wallet-pouch!

Choose when the digital info on your chipped passport and credit/ID cards is 'on' or 'off'. Wrapping yourself in aluminum foil isn't enough! The kinds of radio waves used with RFID are tricky and can penetrate all sorts of things---it's a matter of power and antenna size. On a quest for a modern-day magic shielding cloth, I discovered how to make an effective, rigid pouch on the cheap.

Sweet bonuses for the skull and crossbones and jolt cola aluminum on the inside! - Link

HOW TO - Make a Flying Spaghetti Monster costume

flyingSpaghettiCostume.jpg
The folks at Evil Mad Scientist Labs have put up a number of cool Halloween projects, including this Flying Spaghetti Monster costume (I think I just figured out what I want to be this year). They also have an LED pumpkin, Headless Horseman LEGOs (with LED eyes) and other how-tos. Here's a link to the Halloween Projects page.

EMS Labs will be at Maker Faire Austin showing how to make high-tech pumpkins and the umbrella bat costume.

Atari 2600 joystick hacked into TV remote control

Really nice hack and "how-to" to turn an old Atari 2600 joystick into a TV remote control. Now if only you could also use it during "Sunday Night Football" to zap some life back into your ailing team.

Electronic breadboard templates

Breadboard-Arduino-Mcp23S08-1.00-Thumbnail
Philip writes -

Actual-size Electronic Breadboard templates in SVG and other formats. A while ago I was wanting to document some breadboard circuits I was working on and went looking for an SVG-format electronic breadboard template I could use with Inkscape. The only file I found didn't seem to be actual size so I created my own. I've just uploaded a variation of my original design that also includes connectors from the Arduino Diecimila alongside the breadboard. When printed at actual size the dimensions and layout of the holes on this template should be able to accept actual component leads. The template files are in the Public Domain. The files are available in SVG, PDF and PNG format and you can either use an editor like Inkscape to layout your designs or print them out and draw on top. (Because they're actual size you could lay out the actual components on them too.)

Waterhobo

Wwwww3

Tim made an auto-firing water cannon! He writes -

Once upon a time a subdivision swimming pool caused a minor problem, but to a problem solving geek a problem is a problem that needs an answer. So what were the problem and the solution? Well for all you legal types it is rabbits eating in my garden. So for the sake of this discussion we are talking about rabbits, however I must make a disclaimer that in motion detection and autofire if an unwitting person is tresspassing on my property and happens to walk into the field of fire... well we will refer to them as collateral damage...

Kiddie lightsabers 2.0

sabers1.jpg
Steve Lodefink, not one to rest on his past hacks (have you ever sat on a plasma beam weapon?), has revisited his two-minute lightsaber project and come up with something far cooler (and a bit more involved) than that quickie effort. These would be really fun for kids to play with (and by kids, I mean ME).
