Sputnixie - nixie clock

Cherry Clock Oblique
Greg writes -

This site provides a complete design for a nixie tube clock. In this site you will find the schematic, layout, source code, specifications, bill of materials and an enclosure example for my clock design. I have worked on my nixie tube clock design for more than 2 years. The material provided is my design and is thus copyright; I provide it with the intention of sharing my enthusiasm and enjoyment of designing and building a nixie tube clock.

Open source hardware kit project donates $500 to the EFF

Diggeffcheck T
Digg Clearcover T
Remember that open source hardware "Digg button"? It's a simple kit to teach soldering and basic electronics (I co-developed it with Adafruit and Digg)... and part of the goal was to donate proceeds to the EFF, the first $500 was just sent off, this might be the first time an open source hardware project sent money to someone! - Link.

Flashlight beams make music on photo-electric marimba

Make 947
Modern Mechanix 1935

MODERN electronic engineers duplicate the music of a primitive marimba band with light beams, photo-electric cells and radio tubes. Dr. Phillips Thomas of the Westinghouse Research laboratory recently demonstrated a "light music" instrument which played by waving flashlights held in each hand.

Dozens of photo-cells and radio tubes are lined up side by side atop the new musical device. For each musical note there is an oscillating circuit which produces electrical vibrations when light is directed on that circuits photo-cell. Reproducers convert the electrical vibrations into sound which is directed into the marimba pipes.

MAKE vs BUY - Nixie clock kit vs LED "tube" clock

Tubel
For $200 you can buy the Tubes Clock by B&W, they're selling LCDs inside little tubes for the nixie effect or you can buy your own *real* nixie tube clock kits for $150 or less and learn about building electronics. Here are a few of the kit makers to check out...

Capacitive touch pad update

capacitiveSensing2.jpg
Gordon has posted new info and pics on justDIY for his capacitive touch pad project. Happy with the results of the prototype, he sent off the PCB design for fabbing. He added a 2x8 header to the board, for use with a ribbon cable. He also increased the values on the caps, settling on polyester film 220 nF (double what he used on the prototype).

Multimeter Tutorial - Learning about continuity

Mastechopen-500
Nice tutorial on using a multimeter and continuity -

You might be asking, "What is continuity?" But don't worry, it's quite simple! Continuity means, are two things electrically connected. So if two electronic parts are connected with a wire, they are continuous. If they are connected with cotton string, they are not: while they are connected, the cotton string is not conductive.

For some basic circuits you can just look to see where the wires go to determine continuity but it's always wise to use a multimeter. Sometimes wires break or you're tired and can't easily follow all the PCB traces.

The MIDI viewport

View
Atmel based MIDI data analyzer -

The MIDI Viewport is a data analyzer for MIDI messages. But it is also much more. Handheld, battery powered, and compact, it displays MIDI data in the order it is received, one byte at a time--using an LCD 2 line by 16 character display. Connected to a keyboard or sequencer it will tell you, in English, which MIDI events are being sent by the device. You can scroll through the 64-byte buffer to see what is really going on in your MIDI system.

Get loopy with the DIY $10 Ableton Footcontroller (no soldering required)

Loopy
Peter writes -

Mike Una has just written up a tutorial on how to make a $10 foot controller for music applications like Ableton Live, fashioned out of a QWERTY keyboard. (Other possible applications: gaming, VJing.) Clever keyboard mappings allow you to use your feet to control elaborate live music performances, whether you're a beatboxer, keyboardist, DJ, or violinist. We'd love to see what people do with it.

Single tube nixie clock

Mmmm, glowie -

Single Tube clock blinks out the current time number by number. Quite easy to read! This clock is utilizing a Russian ИН-1 (IN-1) Nixie Tube & Socket. The PCB was home-made using the board designed by SQ8CBY. The original design and code for the PIC 16F84A was created by Electronics and More. The board incorporates both a High Voltage step-up circuit (originally designed by Lance Turner) and logic. The clock is powered by a 9v wall-wart.

That's for sure. Unfortunately.

For starters, here are the impossible rollerskates. Also known as caster skates. Ian Alex demonstrates how to use them. Stand up, Move legs, fall down. To make your pair, just screw some casters to boards and tape them to your feet as shown. Enjoy!

Electromarketman sent in an incredible set of photos from Seoul's electronic and mechanical components markets, he writes -

I was just in Seoul and took these pictures. For everyone who has ever slogged through Home depot trying to find a particular little nut or bolt or bearing, and for everyone who likes to buy electronic components by the gallon, Seoul is heaven. I have included limited instructions on how to get there, in the text of the Flickr set. Unfortunately there are very few good English maps of Seoul.
