Hacking a Digg button with a removable interface cable

Fyp8592F23Z38Oc.Medium

Here's a neat hack for folks who have the Digg button (beginner electronics kit that mimics the Digg site, I worked on the kit)... Bobber writes -

The Digg Button from adafruit industries www.adafruit.com is a very simple DIY electronics kit suitable for beginners. It consists of a microprocessor, a 3-digit display, a button and some available i/o pins.

As it comes from adafruit, it's a counter that displays the number of times it's button has been pressed. The open i/o lines can be connected with jumpers (small pieces of wire) to produce a couple of different behaviors.

But, with a simple parallel interface connecting it to a computer, it can be a sturdy platform for experimenting with microprocessor programming.

The site, www.ladyada.net, which has all the instructions and support forums for adafruit products, has instructions for some simple software hacks based on ponyprog 2000, a program for communicating with the microprocessor. The site also describes how to make a simple parallel port connector to connect the Digg Button to your computer. The description is very straight forward, but it requires soldering the connector to the Digg Button. This is not conducive to hacking your button then displaying your warez.

SO, since I like showing off what I do, I designed a simple clip-on connector that allows me to easily connect and disconnect my Digg Button for hacking. I also created a modded version of the Button firmware, which I'm calling diggX, that can be uploaded using this cable and can itself be hacked using ponyprog 2000.

The Bamboo bicycle trailer & DIY bicycle trailers

P Bamboo Fl Line
P Bamboo Desert
Here's DIY bamboo bicycle trailer you can email for the free plans... -

Materials
You'll need eight lengths of material capable of withstanding bending and compression, tubing or angle iron are ideal. You also need eight "spokes" that are good at taking tension. These could be wire, chain, or steel strip. Exoticists could use Titanium tubes and Kevlar rope. Two wheels from a donor bike are also needed.

Basic Layout
Seven tubes are pinned or bound together where they cross to create the basic frame shape that looks like a 6. This structure can distort like a parallelogram, or warp like a sheet of paper.

The Revolutionary Bit
With the addition of the eight spokes and the last tube this floppy structure transforms into a stiff light structure reminiscent of a square bicycle wheel. Imagine the square load area as the rim of a wheel, with 8 spokes connecting from its corners to a central hub. Truing these controls how square and flat the trailer frame is. The arrangement can be dished to make it flatter on the load side than the underside. Four spokes stops the structure from parallelograming while the addition of another four and the hub stops the frame warping. The top set of spokes could be replaced by a plywood/metal sheet, that forms a load bed.

Homemade CatCamera

Catcam7
Catcam9
Another cat project today... J.Perthold made a camera that takes pictures automatically... from a cat! -

Sometimes I have some challenging ideas, or crazy like some other people would say. This time I thought about our cat who is the whole day out, returning sometimes hungry sometimes not, sometimes with traces of fights, sometimes he stay also the night out.
When he finally returns, I wonder where he was and what he did during his day. This brought me to the idea to equip the cat with a camera. The plan was to put a little camera around his neck which takes every few minutes a picture. After he is returning, the camera would show his day. First I thought about transmitting live pictures from a remote RF camera, but the equipment is too expensive and battery consumption is too high.

So the idea was born and split into these parts:

  • find small, lightweight, inexpensive digital camera
  • develop a controller for the camera
  • protect the camera from cat attack
  • mount equipment to cat

HOW TO - Make SUPER CATNIP... isolation of nepetalactone from catnip

F3Lwx69F23Z371E.Medium

Talbotron22 shows you how to make SUPER CATNIP... isolation of nepetalactone from catnip -

At least two thirds of domestic cats "enjoy" the effects of Nepeta, a.k.a. "catnip." But do they it enjoy it enough? If humans were able to isolate the active ingredient in catnip, could we not use it to become omnipowerful CATGODS? Imagine the possibilities! What fool wouldn't want their own personal cat army? A massive fuzzy force with which to execute your every bidding? A united, unquestioning militia that requires nothing other than unfettered access to the super-powerful catnip products that give their adorable cuddly lives meaning?

Nepetalactone is the active ingredient in catnip.* Today we are going to isolate nepetalactone in its pure form through a steam distillation. The distilled liquid will be extracted with an organic solvent (toluene), refined, then evaporated to give the final product.

Now I know what you're thinking: is it safe for cats to be around such a concentrated extract of catnip? Hell yes! Within reason. And we're all reasonable people. Pure nepetalactone has been studied on cats extensively. In fact, "catnip oil" that is available from botanical stores is essentially just nepetalactone, and it is widely used in homeopathic medicine. More details later.

* Note: pure nepetalactone will not enable you to create a cat army.

Toenail necklace

Toenail Necklace Labeled
Jan Ryerse made a necklace out of busted toenails from marathon running, yikes-

Ryerse, who estimates he's run more than 50,000 miles, also says ultrarunning gives him a profound sense of well-being. It helps him sleep better and raises his energy.

But, he says, an ultrarunner's body will do some strange things in an ultramarathon. For instance, hands and feet swell to the point where a runner may have to change into larger shoes. And they frequently lose toenails.

"They get black from pounding into the top of your shoes," Ryerse says. "I have a toenail necklace. From a distance it looks kind of nice. It looks like it's made of seashells."

Most ultrarunners will tell you that the shared experience of mentally and physically battling the incomprehensible is by far the biggest draw.

Build a universal wireless repeater appliance

wrt54g_20070530.jpg
Jason @ Hackszine
writes -

The beta-v24 version of the DD-WRT firmware has a new feature that allows it to function as a standalone range expander. This is similar to the functionality provided by a wireless distribution system (WDS) network configuration, but unlike traditional WDS, the repeater router emulates a standard client connection to the parent router. This eliminates the need to have two DD-WRT supported routers, running the same firmware, both set up specially for this purpose.

Simply put, you can configure a single repeater appliance and it will work in conjunction with the wireless router you normaly use at your home or office, regardless of the primary router's model or firmware. There's even an "AutoAP" option, which will allow your repeater to automatically monitor and connect to the access point with the strongest signal.

Complete instructions for getting this set up are available at the DD-WRT forums - Link.

MAX - headphone amp

Make 655
Jon writes -

The Millett Hybrid Maxed, or Millett MAX, or MAX for short, is a vacuum tube and solid state hybrid headphone amplifier. It is the latest refinement in a series of headphone amplifiers that began with Pete Millett, its namesake. This is a fantastic headphone amp. The design even includes vacuum tubes illumniated by blue LEDs!! Colin Toole is currently taking names and quantities for a group buy of the custom PCB designed for the MAX amp. The expected cost is $12, however, it could be less if enough people place orders. Orders can be placed until June 3rd. More than 253 have been spoken for so far.

LM555 Tick tick tick

Withoutbattery
Withbattery
Dave writes in -

I wanted to see how few parts I could use, from what I had on hand, to build this clicking blinking LED device based on a 555 chip.

This article was submitted by Lee Bornifield as part of the "Hobby parts for articles " program. Write something of interest to electronic hobbyist and receive parts for your next project.

Probably the most expensive part is the 9V battery. There is no circuit board, and no additional wires; just bending the leads of the components provides enough connections.

The earphone clicks and the red LED blinks at a constant 137 times a minute. The exact rate depends on the value of the resistor and capacitor. That rate will be maintained very precisely for the life of the battery. It's not forever, but listening closely I could still hear the earphone faintly clicking after 6 days of continuous operation.

They went completely Mentos

Bilde-1
After Maker Faire it seems that our friends went on to create the largest Mentos Geyser in history for the Guinness World Records! (pictured here, some of the action by The Enquirer/Jeff Swinger).

A total of 504 Mentos geysers launched on Fountain Square this evening, pointing Cincinnati toward the Guinness Book of World Records for something no one previously had done.

The event lasted mere seconds. After a countdown, the hundreds of poncho-wearing participants pulled a toothpick from a tube that was holding six Mentos, releasing the candies into a 2-liter Diet Coke bottle.
