Firefly Squid light

Firefly Squid
Pink Tentacle has a story about a living light national monument - "Toyama Bay is the habitat of the world-famous glowing firefly squid, which surface in large numbers every spring in a phenomenon that has been designated a special natural monument. Peak season for the firefly squid means big business for sightseeing boats that provide a close-up view of the magical catches." [via] - Link.

12 - 30-inch flatscreens mount

21063 Step2 Full
21063 Step9 Full1
Clay writes - "When friend of QJ.NET "Crazy Jon" called us up and told us about a project he was working on, we didn't believe it at first. But when we got to his house, sure enough -- twelve 30-inch Dell flatscreen monitors are sitting in his office, and he's grinning from ear to ear. Also among the pile of goodies are six NVidia GeForce 7900 GTX 512mb video cards, and three Turbo-Cool 1KW 1000-watt power supplies. Soon the QJ.NET crew was busy unboxing and tackling the project of mounting these bad boys." - Link.

Related note, 5 - 32" Mac monitors too!?

3D video game

Neat - this looks like a lot of fun, a video game is projected on to a 3D structure / sculpture and you move the little character around the surfaces.

Homemade Star Wars Landspeeder you can drive

60 3
Wow, this auction started and ended before I could even post it, and I see why - "This running replica of the Star Wars Landspeeder was built by a professional movie and concept car builder. It is based on a 1988 Ford Escort donor. This was actually licensed in California and I has driven it on the Hollywood Freeway to Hollywood Boulevard (Chinese Theater) for a photo op. From a log book side of things you would get it registered as an Escort left hand drive import with body kit! The radiator has been redone and the tranny and other drive parts checked and work very well!

For a realistic look, it has not been done in a "factory fresh" style but made to reflect the idea that it has been in the desert and in use for decades. Right now there is some touch-up painting needed but otherwise it looks good. If you are into it, you can redo the interior dash to a better Landspeeder look and that should not take a lot of work if you do it yourself. " [via] - Link.

Paper Pixels

P1010053 600
Aram Bartholl's Paper Pixels - "Paper Pixels is a 30 inch, 8 x 8 pixel, manually controlled screen. Each of the 64 pixels is illuminated steadily by a light bulb. Apart from the light bulbs, no further electronic parts are used. The display is controlled by a long paper strip - the data medium - into which have been punched holes arranged along 64 rows or "tracks". As the strip is pulled by hand between the light sources and the pixels, these holes control each of the pixels individually." [via] - Link.

Aram Bartholl's breakfast PC - "The Wooden Breakfast Platter for Freerk, made as a gift for a good friend, is a wooden plank into which a PC Mainboard has been built. The 133 Mhz processor remains visible over a hole in the rustic wooden platter. This serves as hot plate for a coffee cup that can be placed directly on the processsor. The functioning mainboard is powered by an external power unit and the system can be booted from an external disk drive." - Link.

The history of Monowheels

1Stmonocycle
Douglas writes - "A monowheel (or motorwheel) is one big wheel with rider and engine (if any) INSIDE its circumference. It is not to be confused with a unicycle, which has the rider above the wheel. You'll see what I mean. (Sometimes the word "motorwheel" refers to just a wheel with an engine built into it, as opposed to having a separate motor that turns the wheel via an axle. Two wheels one after the other is just a motorcycle- unless what they support is actually a complete car, with gyroscope stabilisation to stop it falling over. I put this page together purely as the result of a coincidence. I happened to see the two b/w photographs below on the same day (in widely differing circumstances) and I thought that this must be one of the most neglected modes of transport ever. That this neglect is wholly justified is neither here nor there. " [via] - Link.

Pictured above, possibly the first monowheel.

Maker07
Also on that page, our Kerry McLean from our book Makers. A 225-horsepower gasoline-powered monowheel - "You may be hauling ass, but you feel like you're floating," says McLean. The metal fabricator and machinist built his first monowheel in 1970 and has been obsessively perfecting the design ever since. "I don't feel like anyone has seen it through," he says. "You hear words like 'trial and error.' That's just some hillbilly stuff. Broomsticks and baling wire. I'm doing R&D." Link.

House of Beer Cans

Portraitinhall
I didn't know there was an online store devoted to beer cans, but there is, and they also have a tour of the second biggest collection of cans - " The building and displays were constructed between 1998 and 2001 with the help of Jeff's father Fred, friends and other family members. The collection, which numbers in excess of 50,000 different cans, is the second largest of it's kind in the world." [via] - Link.
