Stamp keyboard

Jake writes -

Andy sent me a couple of shots of his beautiful stamp decorated keyboards. He write that he's made about 10 of these beauties. Each of his keyboards are made with the stamps of a single nation and often commemorate a royal coronation or celebrate a particular sport. Andy's friends and family are most often the lucky recipients of these works of art.

Tesla coil super mario duet

Steve Ward and Jeff Larson constructed these two solid-state Tesla coils, then programmed them to play the Super Mario Brothers theme.
Twin Solid State Musical Tesla coils playing Mario Bros theme song at the 2007 Lightning on the Lawn Teslathon sponsored by DC Cox (Resonance Research Corp) in Baraboo WI. The music that you hear is coming from the sparks that these two identical high power solid state Tesla coils are generating. There are no speakers involved. The Tesla coils stand 7 feet tall and are each capable of putting out over 12 foot of spark. They are spaced about 18 feet apart. The coils are controlled over a fiber optic link by a single laptop computer. Each coil is assigned to a midi channel which it responds to by playing notes that are programed into the computer software.

Solar hat fan keeps you cool

hat.jpg

This baseball hat has a solar panel on top and DC motorized fan on the front with a nice ventilation hole cut in the bill. Very handy for a summer day or also useful for walks through well lit bakeries if you want the full aromatic experience.

Turn your old scanner into a camera of sorts

scanning_camera.jpg

Here's a nice hack that shows you how to convert your outdated scanner into a cheapo digital camera that can "scan" its surroundings. Pretty interesting images result from the process.

A world made of Spam makes us appreciate it more

spammapworld72.jpg

This world map made of Spam looks tasty doesn't it? After the proliferation of Spam as a ration by the US Army in WWII, this disgusting substance has invaded the rest of the planet as a standard source of meat. From the site, apparently "Spam's diasporic nature is symbolic of America's ongoing influence on many nations. S-P-A-M is M-A-P-S in reverse."

'Reverse Graffiti' artist Creates tunnel of skulls on the underwire

Im Orion8 3
My favorite type of graffiti... Eric @ Wired writes -

A street artist has got to have a serious bone to pick to keep on working in front of shouting, gun-waving cops. Then again, I guess Alexandre Orion had a bit of an advantage when the police tried to nab him in a São Paulo street tunnel: He wasn't painting city property, he was cleaning it. For over two weeks last year, the Brazilian artist selectively scrubbed soot from the tunnel until the white surface underneath stared through as a cemetery's worth of skulls.

The TV remote control

Remotecontrolorperation
"TV remote control" by Philippe Kindelis -

The TV remote control uses the principle of water displacement and the conductive properties of water to connect different cables. It highlights principles and processes that the user can interact with. It is an exploration as to whether water and electricity can be put together to create a new narrative in the way we interact with technological products.

Toaster lets you write on your breakfast

toast.jpg

Good morning Makers! With this toaster you can send messages to people's toast before they are awake enough to understand what is going on. Not bad, but don't try to use this with whole wheat toast. Not only might you not be able to read anything, you might think your toaster was just acting up.

Nice how-to on creating this huge Rubik's Cube 15-inch Direct-Servo Subwoofer.
For only $1586, you too can build one and then after you are done, try to figure out how to solve the puzzle. You might need King Kong's help.

Waterhobo

Tim made an auto-firing water cannon! He writes -

Once upon a time a subdivision swimming pool caused a minor problem, but to a problem solving geek a problem is a problem that needs an answer. So what were the problem and the solution? Well for all you legal types it is rabbits eating in my garden. So for the sake of this discussion we are talking about rabbits, however I must make a disclaimer that in motion detection and autofire if an unwitting person is tresspassing on my property and happens to walk into the field of fire... well we will refer to them as collateral damage...

ReLeaf rain collector gives your plants more sustenance while it rains

releaf.jpg

Made in Switzerland by Fulguro, "ReLEAF" is a rain collector that uses folded thermo lacquered aluminum sheets that look like plant leaves to collect extra rainwater and funnel it down to your thirsty plants. These can be inserted into any plants and thus make for a nice way for the lazy gardener to keep their outdoor plants alive longer.

The Satelloons

Echo Satelloon Color
Greg writes -

From about 1956 until 1964, US aeronautics engineers and rocket scientists at the Langley Research Center developed a series of spherical satellite balloons called, awesomely enough, satelloons. Dubbed Project Echo, the 100-foot diameter aluminumized balloons were one of the inaugural projects for NASA, which was established in 1958.
