In 2003 and 2004 I had an art studio and I would paint giant color field paintings using a knife with thick layers of oil paint. These would take days to dry and so I started making dolls to fill the time. I made the first one, a cute sad bunny, and took it to an art opening that night sticking out of my pocket. Over the course of the evening, four strangers tried to buy it off of me! I didn't sell, but it got me started!

The sympathy doll idea is to make a doll that is so sad and pathetic that it inspires empathy and love from people. You really can't feel too bad around these dolls because you just know that no matter what, you don't have it that bad! I've made hundreds of these dolls, and here's a small gallery of dolls that I've made for you to check out. - Link

It's the 5th anniversary of creative commons this week! I'm licensing Sympathy Dolls under the creative commons attribution license, so feel free to make them and sell them, just make sure to give attribution to me with a link to brepettis.com and you're good! Also if you're going to be at the CC party in Berlin tonight, make sure to say hi! - Link

First you'll want to mix up some glue and mix it up 50/50 with water to make it runny. Then use a brush to brush on the glue around the edges and stack it up on some books so that the book doesn't warp. I used a plastic bag to keep the glue away from the parts of the book that I wanted to keep original.

Here's what the underside of the bot looks like. You can see the iron pipes that work as a base, the lasercut platforms, and the skate bearings that make it move silky smooth.

Zach of the Reprap foundation has done a lot of work to get ordering the Repstrap's parts organized. He's put together a really easy way to order the stuff from McMaster Carr. I chose regular shipping and it arrived the next day in NYC and then I brought everything to Europe to work on in a Pelican case. - Link

In the PDF you can read about some of the obstacles overcome in making this bot, but those aside, the best part of this project was the awesome team that pulled together to work on it. The folks at Metalab, GRL Vienna, and Monochrom came together to make this project happen. At one time there were about 12 people all working on the project at 3 in the morning and the focus and excitement in the air was tangible. This project is on the same level as the drawbot and the near-space balloon. In all three of these projects, I've made great new friends out of sheer necessary and desperate collaboration. It's been super fun! I recommend doing ambitious projects as a team!

I got my steppers donated to me from Marius at the metalab. They were sourced from 2 broken printers and a scanner. The important thing when you are looking for bipolar steppers is that they have 4 wires coming out of them. This indicates that they are bipolar steppers.

There is more information about steppers for you to check out here. - Link

Making insanely cool origami isn't easy. This week's video and PDF work to make it easier to make the $3 dollar origami flower found in Craft: 05. If you live in a country with different currency, I'd love to see this in international flavors! If your base currency is worth more than can be left as a tip, I challenge you to make your own money shaped designs. Upload them to the Flickr Craft Pool!

The hardest parts for me were step 14 and 19, so I've put lots of pictures in the pdf that help make these steps easier! It took me a few tries to figure this out so if you're having trouble, don't give up! - PDF Link

I went to a big box hardware store to pick up the parts for this. If I remember right it came out to be about $75 with lots of PVC left over for other projects. It took at least an hour to find all the parts in the store. Seriously, hardware stores don't organize the section with plumbing stuff very well.
