Make a Repstrap (Part 2) - Weekend Projects Podcast

MP4 | Hi-Def | Blip | Youtube | PDF | Subscribe

In this Weekend Projects podcast I'll walk you through the different parts of the hardware on the reprap. You'll want to take a look at the pdf for parts lists and more detailed info to get started on the hardware for this project. The software is still in development and until then you should be able to get your reprap working as a McWire Mill until the code gets done. Remember this is an experimental research community project! I really like this design. It's solid, easy to take apart and put together. It's also relatively transportable.

Sponsored by Ponoko: Ponoko is a new concept that's perfect for Makeziners. Use it to make and promote your product ideas. Ponoko supplies the digital manufacturing technology and the materials, you supply the creativity. Plus you can sell your product ideas in their showroom. Make a design, upload it - have it cut on laser cutter and delivered to you.

If you're one of the first 10 Makeziners to make a product using Ponoko you'll get shipping for free.

Now *before* you grab up all the free shipping requests please please upload your designs and consider *making a product* a lot of folks out there uploaded designs but didn't get a product made (yet) that's ok - but ideally Ponoko would like to see more folks getting something made to take advantage of the free shipping, thanks.

Make a Repstrap (Part 2) - Weekend Projects PDFcast

Repstrap Screen Shots

Here's what the underside of the bot looks like. You can see the iron pipes that work as a base, the lasercut platforms, and the skate bearings that make it move silky smooth.

Zach of the Reprap foundation has done a lot of work to get ordering the Repstrap's parts organized. He's put together a really easy way to order the stuff from McMaster Carr. I chose regular shipping and it arrived the next day in NYC and then I brought everything to Europe to work on in a Pelican case. - Link

In the PDF you can read about some of the obstacles overcome in making this bot, but those aside, the best part of this project was the awesome team that pulled together to work on it. The folks at Metalab, GRL Vienna, and Monochrom came together to make this project happen. At one time there were about 12 people all working on the project at 3 in the morning and the focus and excitement in the air was tangible. This project is on the same level as the drawbot and the near-space balloon. In all three of these projects, I've made great new friends out of sheer necessary and desperate collaboration. It's been super fun! I recommend doing ambitious projects as a team!

I got my steppers donated to me from Marius at the metalab. They were sourced from 2 broken printers and a scanner. The important thing when you are looking for bipolar steppers is that they have 4 wires coming out of them. This indicates that they are bipolar steppers.

There is more information about steppers for you to check out here. - Link

Make a Reprap Robot Part 1: The Electronics - Weekend Project Podcast

MP4 | Hi-Def | Blip | Youtube | PDF | Subscribe

This week, take the first step towards making your own self-replicating rapid-prototyping robot! You can order up your boards, from the Reprap foundation or make your own since the whole project is open source. Get your parts and solder these up and test them! Huge thanks goes out to Zach Hoeken, who inspired this project. Marius Kintel, Philipp Tiefenbacher, Benko, Red, and other folks at Metalab along with Michael Zeltner and Flo of the GRL Vienna crew pulled a lot of all nighters this week getting this robot together to present at Roboexotica. The best ways to make excellent new friends is to ask for help on an ambitious project!

Make a Reprap Robot Part 1: The Electronics - Weekend Project PDFcast

Finished RR Shotbot

Getting the electronics set up is the first step to getting a working reprap robot together. Besides 3 stepper boards, 1 dc motor controller board, a PWM board, you'll want two arduinos and an arduino tx/rx thingy!

Download the pdf for more information and then download the test code so that you can hook up the boards to stepper motors and dc motors to test them out.

$3 Origami Flower - Weekend Projects Podcast

MP4 | Hi-Def | Blip | Youtube | PDF | Subscribe

This weekend, make a flower out of 3 bills. This makes a great tip for a nice dinner out or just a way to spend 20 minutes or so folding paper! This project is from Craft: Magazine Volume 5 and the origami was designed by Robert J. Lang and Diagrammed by Jeffrey Rutzky.

On a sidenote, I really like the music I hacked together for this video. I'm releasing it as an mp3 under the creative commons license! - MP3 Link

$3 Origami Flower - Weekend Projects PDFcast

2037399058 Cdd01A9A6C-1

Making insanely cool origami isn't easy. This week's video and PDF work to make it easier to make the $3 dollar origami flower found in Craft: 05. If you live in a country with different currency, I'd love to see this in international flavors! If your base currency is worth more than can be left as a tip, I challenge you to make your own money shaped designs. Upload them to the Flickr Craft Pool!

The hardest parts for me were step 14 and 19, so I've put lots of pictures in the pdf that help make these steps easier! It took me a few tries to figure this out so if you're having trouble, don't give up! - PDF Link

T-Shirt Cannon - Weekend Projects Podcast

MP4 | Hi-Def | Blip | YouTube | PDF | Subscribe

Sometimes it can be so frustrating to have people you want to give a T-shirt to who are far away and inaccessible on the upper decks of stadiums. They wave their hands in desperation with such hope and joy at the possibility of receiving a T-shirt from you, but you know in your heart that they won't, because your throwing arm just isn't capable of hurling a T-shirt into the upper decks ...

Fear not, your problem may be solved this weekend if you attempt to build this awesome air-powered, solenoid control valved, tough-looking T-shirt cannon! I collaborated with William Gurstelle, author of Whoosh, Boom, Splat. It's
fun and exciting to work with Bill!

T-Shirt Cannon - Weekend Projects PDFcast

I went to a big box hardware store to pick up the parts for this. If I remember right it came out to be about $75 with lots of PVC left over for other projects. It took at least an hour to find all the parts in the store. Seriously, hardware stores don't organize the section with plumbing stuff very well. I recommend that you fit everything together at the store before leaving so you can make sure that it will all work out. - PDF Link

MP4 | Hi-Def | Blip | Youtube | PDF | Subscribe

This week, Windell Oskay of Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories joins me to teach you how to make a super clever little circuit called the Joule Thief! The Joule Thief allows you to squeeze the life out of what most people think of as "dead" batteries!

We were inspired by Big Clive to make this project and it's the perfect platform for a flashlight, book reading light, or really just something you should make to get more use out of your batteries!

Update: Windell posted more info and a detailed walk through of the toroid winding process. Check it out before you make it! - Link

PDF Halloween Extravaganza! - The Halloweeen PDFcast

1754591008 E0D73517Fd

In order to survive the zombpocalypse, I've got an article on ghoulish makeup from the halloween issue in this weekend's PDFcast. But it doesn't stop there, for your survival this halloween, I've included 5 articles from the Make: Halloween Edition. So If you're still not sure what you should be for halloween, you can download this and be set with some options!

The first article is the most important for surviving the zombie invasion. The second article will help you with make-up. The third is a costume tutorial for being headless. (This could also be helpful in distracting zombies from eating your brain.) Then we didn't want to leave your house in the lurch, so there is an article about transforming your house into a haunted house! I've also included an article about dressing up as sushi, but I don't think dressing up as raw meat will help you when the zombies invade.

Download and revel in the PDF halloween extravaganza! - PDF Link

DIY Vampire Fangs - Weekend Projects Podcast

mp4 | hd-appletv | youtube | blip | vimeo hd experiment | itunes | pdf

Have you ever wanted to suck the blood out of an innocent's neck? If so, then this is the project for you! Eric Skiff came over to help me make vampire fangs! Eric has made these for years using dental acrylic, but recently figured out that acrylic for nails is basically the same material. The great thing about this project is that you'll learn how to mold three different types of materials! We're going to make a negative mold of your teeth out of alginate, a positive mold out of your teeth out of plastic, and then the fangs are made out of a two part acrylic that you'd use to make fake fingernails!

DIY Vampire Fangs - Weekend Projects PDFcast

What you see here is a negative mold of my teeth made of alginate. It's a seaweed product used for dental molding. I got it at my local art supply store. It doesn't taste too bad, but the texture is basically like putting slime-goo in your mouth and you have to have it in for about three minutes. Just because it's non-toxic doesn't mean that it's not totally disgusting.

You can learn about this and the other mold making concoctions for making vampire fangs in the PDFcast which comes with every podcast every week. - PDF link

Make a Theremin - Weekend Projects PDFcast

1486247938 A8122Ca83A-1

I ordered a minimum theremin kit from Harrison Instruments and all the parts were very well marked and it went together easily. You will have to make your own antenna and put it in your own enclosure and I liked that because it gave me a chance to make my theremin unique and special. - PDF Link

There are a bunch of other kits you can buy, but this is the simplest one that I could find. Go check out a previous Make: post with lots of choices for kits. - Link

When you make your theremin, put it in an awesome enclosure and make sure to take photos and upload them to the Make: flickr pool!

Make a Theremin - Weekend Project Podcast

mp4 | hd-appletv | youtube | blip | itunes | pdf

This weekend make a theremin, the first electronic musical instruments that you don't have to touch to play! Leon Theremin invented this in 1918 and Bolshevik leader Lenin liked it enough to take lessons and ordered 600 to be made and sent around the world to show how awesome Russian electronic music was. I made this one using the Harrison Instruments Minimum Theremin kit and put it in a housing that a friend gave me. It works and it's really fun to play!
