MAKE presents: The Inductor

The deceptively simple coil proves incredibly useful in the world of electronics - the inductor's ability to store energy in an electromagnetic field is the key to making transformers, electromagnets, and many more components work. It truly is an awesome device!

I knew little of how inductors worked before starting out on this vid. In fact, none of the circuits I've built ever called for them specifically. But after a bit of research, I was honestly amazed to learn how they work. The process of mutual induction even inspired this little action-painting/diagram -

As always, feel free to leave a comment with your ideas/experiences/corrections/take on the matter.

Fascination: Larry Weiss

fascination_larry_weiss.jpg

Why is Larry Weiss fascinated with hygiene? Well, he believes that it is a human engineering problem that society has attempted to solve chemically, with poor results. So, instead of fighting a losing battle trying to convince people about this, he is working to produce a non-toxic alternative to common cleaning products. Find out the whole story in our exclusive interview with him.

Larry's talk is the latest installment in our Fascination series of interviews with notable scientists and technologists, sponsored by Dow Chemical.

Heather's interview is the latest installment in our Fascination series of interviews with notable scientists and technologists, sponsored by Dow Chemical.

Fascination: Mackenzie Cowell

fascination-mackenzie-cowell.jpg

Mackenzie Cowell is one of the founders of DIYbio.org. He is featured in the most recent of our ongoing series of video interviews with notable makers, sponsored by Dow chemical, over at elementsofhumanity.com. Mac is a big advocate, not just of the fledgling discipline of synthetic biology (or "biological engineering," as it's coming to be known), but of the idea that amateurs, hobbyists, and so-called "citizen scientists" have a meaningful role to play in its development. Check it out.

Fascination: Fiorenzo Omenetto

fiorenzo_omenetto.jpg

Fiorenzo 'Fio' Omenetto, a physicist turned bioengineer at Tufts University, takes a few minutes to explain his fascination with silk. Not your typical fiber artist, Fio is actually using the silk proteins as a material for building bio-compatible sensors that could be safely implanted in humans. Silk may seem like a strange material to use, however it has properties that allow biochemical components that are mixed into it to remain active. As a bonus, it can also be produced using a green, non-toxic and neutral pH process.

Fio's interview is the latest installment in our Fascination series of interviews with notable scientists and technologists.
