LEMUR: League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots

A couple MAKE readers sent in this robot orchestra, looks great - if you're in the DC area, check it out and let us know about it! - "LEMUR is currently engaged in its largest fabrication project to-date, creating custom robotics for George Antheil's "Ballet mecanique," which will be performed from March 12 to 29, 2006 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. The installation of an all-mechanical Ballet mecanique orchestra is being presented in conjunction with the National Gallery's major exhibition on Dada. Antheil's amazing 1924 composition was originally written for three xylophones, four bass drums, tam-tam, two pianists, seven (or so) electric bells, a siren, three airplane propellers and sixteen synchronized player pianos. It is the first time in history that an all-mechanical version of "Ballet mecanique" is being performed." - Link.

HOW TO - Customizable audio amplifier muting circuit

Design News Gadget Freak has a new how to on making an audio amplifier muting circuit - "Ever turned on your car stereo and BOOM! the woofers unexpectedly jumped out for one filling-loosening bass note? Just great, you've just been diagnosed with turn-on thump -- either due to an amp that never had a muting circuit or one that's failed open circuit. Either way, OUCH! To fix this problem, Gary built a circuit that connects externally to any car audio amplifier and keeps his speakers completely disconnected from his amplifier until it's been completely powered up. Plus, it also works with a mis-matched set of amplifiers." - Link.

DIY Electronic drums

LOGIZTIX's instructions for building your own electronic drums - "Building your own electronic drum pads may seem like a difficult task. The concepts behind electronic triggering are actually quite simple. A piezo acts much like a microphone. It picks up shock waves and passes them to your drum module to interpret. The trick is getting the most accurate representation of your sticking action to the module without sacrificing the feel of a real drum. This design accomplishes both goals." [via] - Link.

HOW TO - Make a miniMinty MP3

Make your own miniMinty MP3 player - "...we set out to design the successor to Minty MP3. How about if it fits in an Altoids gum tin? What if it charges its internal Lithium Ion Polymer battery over USB and mounts itself as a Mass Storage Device? And if it runs for 12+ hours on a full charge, looking slick all the while? We built it. They bought it. And so should you. " - Link.

Learn about vacuum tubes with Mr. E.Z. Tube

Ian writes - "Goal/purpose: Mr. E.Z. Tube is a cheap vacuum tube audio platform without the 'iron': no power transformer, no output transformer(s). A tube amplifier will typically have several heavy, expensive transformers: output transformers that protect speakers from high voltages in the tube, and power transformers that provide high voltage by rectifying mains (AC) power. Mr. E.Z. Tube eliminates both, but still uses popular high voltage tubes. Mr. E.Z. Tube is definitely not audiophile gear - it is a platform for learning about tubes (bias, output/input capacitors, etc) without making a huge upfront investment in 'iron'. There are tons of tutorials on working with tubes, this is not one of them. This is a platform that helped me understand what the tutorials were talking about through hands-on experience." - Link.

Neptune - Scrap metal instruments

Clayton writes - "A number of years ago Jason Sanford crafted functional guitars and and a couple drum-kits from scrap metal. Once created, he decided to start a band using these unweildy/heavy instruments. The band, Neptune, is Boston based and hasn't gotten the attention they deserve. Their music is magically dissonent the source of which is their rough playing style combined with their scratch made instruments. They started with a basic set of guitars/bass, a circular ring of rusty truss covered in broken bits of metal and saw blades for banging on, and a second drum kit made of barrels and containers and broken symbols... over time they've gotten into building electronics and have integrated some really smart looking industrial class synthesizer gear into their lineup." - Link video/sounds & instruments.
