The Melloman - DIY Mellotron using 13 old Walkmans!

Melloopen-1
Donemelloman
Michael writes - "This is my interpretation of the Mellotron, a classic instrument invented in the 1960s. It was one of the first sample players, and was used by The Beatles, and countless psychedelic and prog bands. The Mellotron played strips of tape to emulate flutes, strings, choirs, orchestras, etc. The flutes at the beginning of Strawberry Fields are a good example of the Mellotron.

My version, The Melloman, uses Walkmans and cassette tapes to play original Mellotron samples, or whatever cassette tapes you want to put in. Inside the box, there are 14 continuously running Walkmans mounted side by side. The first Walkman is designated for drums, and the next 13 provide sampled loops for 25 notes. - Link.

Circuit Blasting

5405789 F98780B071
I think GetLoFi just identified the next trend in electronic music - "From what I hear "Circuit Blasting" is a new technique of blasting devices with extreme voltages using Victorian style science devices and it is something that Mark Pilkington will be dabbling into at 3pm this Sunday 19 March 2006, at the Camden Arts Centre, Arkwright Road, London NW3 6DG." - Link.

The only other mention on the internet seems to be here - Link.

Cigar box guitar

111675055 83Af5De5C6
MAKE Flick photo pool member Hatchibombotar made a really nice cigar - "It's not perfect (I went a little nuts with the epoxy; some of the hardware is a little too large; many of the holes are a little ragged) but it looks OK, and it works. Next step: install the pickup to make it an electric guitar!" - Link.

Guitar made from AK-47 - The Escopetarra

Colombian
Tom sent in this great guitar mod - "Street musician Cesar Lopez was playing in front of a Bogota country club destroyed by a guerrilla car bomb when he noticed an army guard carrying his rifle the same way López plays his guitar. ''I saw that our body movements were the same,'' Lppez said. ``He had his gun. I had my guitar. And BOF! It hit me.'' The first escopetarra -- a combination of escopeta and guitarra, the Spanish words for rifle and guitar -- was born a few months later." [via] - Link.

HOW TO - Dual voltage regulated power supply for CD-ROM in a truck

1290234F4604591Ae5Ee1Dbf.Medium
Talking Electronics writes - "A friend of mine who runs an electronic shop wants to install an old cd-rom to be used as a stand alone cd-player in his truck. His problem was to find a suitable power supply for this purpose. A cd-rom uses 2 power supplies, 5 Volts which is used in its logic circuit and 12 Volts for its servos. With these parameters I needed to make a dual regulator that produces 5 Volts and 12 Volts output in one input voltage. Trucks usually uses 2 lead-acid batteries so that will be around 24 Volts." Experimental Musical Instruments

Jbhsiren72
David from Durham writes - "Many Make readers will probably remember the print zine Experimental Musical Instruments. It's not in print anymore, but still has a website for back issues etc. and a great set of links & resources. They also sell very cool hardware for making said instruments, for instance, 5/8" magnetic spot pickups, piezo film transducers of odd sizes. Fun stuff, no doubt." Link.

Mystery Circuits - Sound Gizmos!

Helmtop
A wonderful collection of things that make music, Mike writes - "Here are most of the projects I've built/modified from 2000 to present. Click on each picture to see the details of the instrument. Some of the older projects will just have a sound sample when you click rather than link to another page with extra detail. Some won't do anything." Link.
