Cardboard rocketship toy
The PaperPod Rocket comes flat and blank, ready to be decorated by your children. Ships from the UK and is too small for adults, so I think it's a perfect candidate for a re-make. I think I can reverse-engineer this thing from the photo... Nigel's Eco Store sells other eco-friendly holiday gifts as well. - [via] Link.

DIY Cardboard toy kitchen

Anna writes -
Hi - I don't usually self-promote, but I made a toy kitchen for my daughter entirely from scratch using primarily corrugated cardboard that was salvaged from the dumpster. I covered the pieces in contact paper and joined them together using no glue, no nails, nothing but clever joining cuts, which makes the kitchen entirely disassemblable so it can be packed flat for moving/storage. The structure is all my own design. (Can you tell I'm pretty proud of this?)DIY Cardboard toy kitchen - Link.

DIY Minicomic stand

B. writes -
I am tired of seeing minicomics and things just laid flat on the table at conventions and shows. Not only does it reduce visibility of your work, it takes up valuable table space. So here is a terribly basic flat-pack stand that is easily adaptable. Clicking on "all sizes" should give you an image that can be printed out in tiles to produce a full-size template.Stand template - Link.

Mind-boggling Transformers papercraft

You may have seen this item on Boing Boing Gadgets, or elsewhere, but if you're an admirer or practitioner of papercraft, you've got to check the link out (as I just did). This Chinese papercrafter created an incredibly detailed, articulated Bumblebee Transformer model using mainly fast-food containers (this badass cardboard dude is basically a bunch of KFC bucket lids and Orion custard boxes). I love how he uses the colored ink in the packaging as the coloring on the model, a great Bumblebee color match.

Moleskine innie tabs

I'm a big fan of Moleskine journals, both the full-size and the small cahiers. I usually end up writing in them in both directions, with one collection of content, say daily thoughts, ideas, artwork, and work-related miscellany, going from front to back and another type, say brainstorming for a book, going from back to to front. And then I usually have a couple of other though clusters tossed somewhere in the middle. I've tried conventional tabs, but I hate the little flappy things. So I might try this idea I bumped into on a new site for "tiny inventions," called Inventoids. Cut "innie" tabs. I think I'll try it. You can always use color marker bands on the edges, but I think this looks cooler. It's an interesting option, anyway. YMMV.

Gensou Hyouhon Hakubutsukan ("Museum of Fantastic Specimens")

Pink Tentacle writes -
Gensou Hyouhon Hakubutsukan ("Museum of Fantastic Specimens") is an online collection of creatures "curated" by Hajime Emoto. The three-story virtual museum consists of 9 rooms chock full of water- and land-dwelling monstrosities from all corners of the globe. Each specimen has a clickable thumbnail that links to additional photos and historical and background information (in Japanese). The basement contains a bookshop and a cafeteria serving dishes prepared with some of the beasts featured in the museum (such as umiushi sashimi, served fresh from the tank and wriggling on your plate, with a balsamic vinegar sauce).Gensou Hyouhon Hakubutsukan ("Museum of Fantastic Specimens") - [via] Link. All of the creatures showcased in the museum are sculpted from paper, modeling paste and bamboo and are completely imaginary, claims Emoto -- perhaps a disappointment for hunters of the legendary tsuchinoko (center-right in the photo above) in search of an actual specimen, but an amazing collection of critters nonetheless.

An extremely affordable device for better asthma care (Better breathing with origami)

Better breathing with origami -
More than 8 million children in Mexico suffer from asthma. These children and their families travel up to several hours to urban hospitals where they endure long waits to get relief from acute asthma attacks. More troubling still, these families are sent home from the hospital without the means to prevent further attacks. This all but ensures a vicious cycle of frightening and expensive returns to the hospital, and leads to a national asthma fatality rate that is the 8th highest in the world (1.45%).Respira!: An Extremely Affordable Device for Better Asthma Care - Link. The physicians in Health Centers, which provide nearby, free primary care to uninsured Mexicans, can recognize asthma and have access to the medication necessary to treat asthma attacks, but they lack effective, affordable devices to deliver that medication. Mexican Health Centers are stocked with asthma inhalers, which inexpensively create aerosol particles of medication, but these devices are not sufficient to deliver the medication to a child's lungs. Successful use of an inhaler requires that a child coordinate a deep breath with discharging the inhaler. This is challenging for a young child, particularly one gasping in the midst of an asthma attack. As a result, medication does not reach the lungs but is instead absorbed in the mouth and throat, where it causes undesirable systemic side effects.
To overcome these problems, inhalers are used in combination with a device commonly called a "spacer." A spacer is a chamber that attaches to an inhaler, captures the discharged medication and holds it until the patient inhales it. In spite of their effectiveness, these devices are unavailable in Mexican Health Centers due to their cost (~ $50 plus distribution). Using paper and a precise system of cuts and folds, we have designed a spacer that can be produced for approximately 25 cents, a cost reduction of more than 99%. Furthermore, the device can be distributed as a flat sheet to be folded into a usable form on-site, so hundreds can be sent for the cost of a stamp.
