HOW TO - Make a microphone blimp

Gezortenplotz writes - "Wind across a microphone causes distortion and unwanted noise for videographers and nature recorders while taping outside. The purpose of the microphone 'blimp' is to attenuate the wind noise without interfering with the desired sound. Blimps are expensive. This project came in under $40. Mics are interchangeable in this blimp [if the mic's diameter will fit inside]. - Link.

Build an I-mic

Michael writes - "I remember building this impressive microphone myself a few years back. A great low-cost harmonica microphone built from secondhand stuff anyone can find in their local supermarket plus a few components that can be found in any electronics shop. At the worst the parts should cost around $8." - Link.

Rip, mix, burn - your phone calls

$900 is crazy expensive, but this is a really neat idea - "The FeaturePhone 175 can be used as an ordinary recorder at any time. It can be used as a dictating device and to record meetings by using the internal microphone, but it can also be connected to a special conference microphone, available as an option, or for that matter to any other microphone or audio source...Think of a FeaturePhone 175 CD as a database. Both the actual telephone and your PC can search the CD quickly using a range of criteria such as telephone number, date, time and duration of a call." You can also encrypt the phone call recordings - [via] Link.

HOW TO - Simple Microphone Preamplifier
Tomi writes - "This is a simple microphone preamplifier circuit which you can use between your microphone and stereo amplifier. This circuit amplifier microphone suitable for use with normal home stereo amplifier line/CD/aux/tape inputs. This microphone preamplifier can take both dynamic and electret microphone inputs (preamplifier provides power foe electret microphone elements). The idea of this circuit is to keep the design as simple as possible to be easy to build. That was my goal when I needed a simple external microphone preamplifier for my mixer. The performance of the circuit is nothing superior but can be used with many not so serious projects." Link.

DVD to iPod - Convert, the easy way (Mac)
This is the best application in the entire world for converting DVDs to iPod video, it's one click - "HandBrake Lite is a horribly-mangled abomination of HandBrake, jettisoning its non-crucial features with the one-track goal of creating iPod-sized movies from DVDs. You only really need to click two buttons to rip a DVD for iPod. It's as easy as that. Less stuff to read, and fewer confusing words. All videos are automatically resized to 320px wide. Widescreen movies are properly cropped before conversion. Smaller interface, easier to stash away on your screen somewhere." Link.

REAPER - Rapid Environment for Audio Prototyping
Justin Frankel (Winamp & Ninjam creator) has a new multitrack recording software called REAPER. This is a pretty good PC program to try out, small, fast, looks like it can tap in to your system sound for recording Skype or other VoIPs too, that could be useful for podcasts, etc. Don't fear the Reaper, it's free, for now. Turn a RSS feed into a audio with Feed2Podcast
Robie from Pirateweather writes about a new service called Feed2Podcast that will turn your RSS feed (or any RSS feed) into a audio player so you can listen to the feed "They/we use new text to speech engine and your rss feed and turn your blog into a podcast instantly" It's a pretty good text to speech engine - here's what it sounds like with their preview audio player, click here to listen. Neat!

HOW TO - Make a podcast from a website
Want a robotic voice to read the news from Google on your music player? Here's how. Jeremy english writes - "This document explains the step used to create a podcast of google news. A bunch of standard unix tools are used to get the job done. You can get a copy of the scripts here. All of the work is done on my local machine then uploaded. The host, where my website sits, does not let me use my own executables. I will be skipping the process of uploading the files since that is unique to my webserver." Link.

Record podcasts with your browser on ODEO
The ODEO podcast studio is now open - I was on the beta, and it's really fun - "...everyone can now record audio with the browser-based Odeo Studio - or via the phone. Either way, your voice gets posted as an MP3 on an Odeo page, and from there you can easily share it or edit the title, etc. We've also made some changes to how the site looks and works, which we think make it simpler and move it closer to our vision of Podcasting for Regular People." Link. Anyone with a web browser can pretty much make their own audio show, excellent use of Macromedia Flash and Com server...
